    Does someone prepare Finnish Translations?

    • Boudewijn Sjouke

      Hi Meliza,

Currently we haven't got a Finnish translation of PHPGedView. However, it's easy to add additional languages, so if someone is prepared to have a go at the Finnish translation, we will be pleased to help.

      Regards,

      Boudewijn.

      Hi all,

Just happened to find PhpGedView yesterday and have been playing with it. Seems to be something I've been looking for.
And, indeed, Finnish translations seem to be nonexistent. Before they become available, I thought of adding at least facts.fi.php for testing (leaving the rest in English), but couldn't figure yet as how to add one more language to be selected.

      Regards,

      :) Jaska

Pitäisikö jatkaa suomennosta? itellä voisi aina välillä olla hieman aikaa tehdä joitain suomennoksia. Omaksi iloksi on jo tullutkin tehtyä jonkin verran käyttöliittymään liittyviä päivityksiä.

      Mauri,

Olisi upeaa jos voisit jatkaa suomennoksia.
Matti on silloin tällöin suomentanut tekstejä.

      Mitä versiota sinä käytät?
Tekstit pitäisi kääntää jatkuvasti myös SVN versioon.

        Kuis toi SVN homma toimii?

      Mauri,

      Voin ainoastaan nähdä PhpGedView sivusi.
      En pääse languages ... sivuille.

      Voitko lähettää minulle tietueen?
      Muokkaan sen sivuillani 4.1 sopivaksi.

      Mauri,

      Voitko ilmoittaa jos jatkat kääntämistä.
Jos et jatka pitäisi löytää uusi kääntäjä.

      PhpGedView 4.1 uudet tekstit puuttuvat.

Voin kyllä jatkaa. on ollut vain melko kiireistä aikaa muutenkin. Yritän pistää hommaa eteenpäin tuossa viikonloppuna.

The second largest file in ..../languages is help_text.fi.php

Of course, I have no clue how old it is.  It's dated earlier this year, but
that might be the date it was pulled out of SVN.

The translator tools, accessible from the admin config page, are useful, though if you are using internet explorer six, it doesn't render UTF-8 in text fields.

        Wes:
The most current Finnish language files are dated July 12, 2007 and are very capably kept current by Meliza and by Matti.  Meliza also does Hebrew, and Matti does Swedish.

I don't know how they find the time to do all that!

Your problem with "IE6 doesn't properly display UTF-8 text in the language translator tools" seems to be a problem with your copy of IE6 and how it's configured.  My copy doesn't do that.

I misinterpreted the forum display and thought this was a new topic!

[[Your problem with "IE6 doesn't properly display UTF-8 text in the language translator tools" seems to be a problem with your copy of IE6 and how it's configured]]

That's quite possible.  Though it's not "in the translator tools," it's "in text fields"  The charset in the meta tag said UTF-8 and text outside of the editing area was fine.  Inside, every non-ASCII character (such as the three in '¿Qué año?') was a empty box (as it is right now here).  But after clicking save, the text is no longer in a textarea element and is rendered correctly.

I don't have full control over the IE settings here at work, and the only other access I have to IE 6 is at the library where they have even disabled access to all configuration widgets.

I think I discovered the problem, though.  If I'm right, it's a bug, but I'll have to do some experimenting to determine that.

Some corrections to what Gerry wrote.

      1. Matti Valve no longer translates the Finnish texts. He never translated Swedish texts. He used sometimes the Swedish translations to clarify the meaning of some texts.

I want to thank Matti for the great work he did translating texts to Finnish.

      2. We have a new translator for the Finnish texts. His name is Jani Miettinen.
Jani prepared in July translations mainly to the 4.0 Admin.fi.php file.
He has translated also other files on his site.
We need to establish a procedure to get the updated files uploaded to SVN.

        Jani:
        Welcome aboard.

When you're doing ANY modifications to the language files, you should ensure that your name is listed among the translators.  This is the only way we have to ensure that you are credited for the work you do.

Translation is VERY hard work, especially when the original English has not been written with translation in mind.

If you wish, you can also use the German version to verify the meaning of the English text.  I try to keep the _new_ text current, and sometimes have to change the English so that it translates properly.  I'm gradually working through some of the older German Help text.  That's not easy.

        About getting things into SVN:
Jani should request SVN access from John, so that he can post himself.  Since you and Janni both do Finnish, you'll have to establish an off-line method to co-ordinate your tasks, so that you don't both end up doing the same work.
