Age specific relative names

    Hello,

The indonesian translation getting slowly progress. The maps are hopefully soon finished. Is there any way to have bigger maps than 400px? The country map is bit too wide because Indonesia has so many islands and is wide and if I resize it to 400px it is nearly unreadable (400x120). Is it an option to split the map and have the left part on top and the right part under the first part? Any suggestions?

In indonesian language it is common to call older and younger sisters and brothers with different names. Like 'brother' there exists 'abang' for older brothers and 'adik' for younger brothers. The same also with sisters and so on. Just wondering if it is possible to add support for such translations? I know in most languages it is not used and would be just a small extra feature for good localisations. But I think for such geneology project also such small things could be interesting.

    Thanks!

    Regards,
    Klaus

      Klaus:
There's no rule about maps being restricted to 400px width.  You can make them as wide or as tall as you wish.  You should try to make the map fit into a 800px wide screen, so the practical limit is around 720px.

I think that at this stage, it would be very difficult to implement different sibling names as you describe.  This might be considered for a future implementation, or it might become something that's specific to Indonesian.  We already have some date functions that are specific to certain languages, and your request might fit into that.

That's good to know! I will try bit more how to get the map best displayed. Well, I have just read in the WIKI "resize it to less than 400 pixels wide" (http://wiki.phpgedview.net/en/index.php/How_to:Place_Maps) and therefor I thought it was restricted to 400px.

It doesn't hurry with my the different sibling names and if it could get implimented in one release later would be just great.
Thank you very much for your replies!!!

      Hi Klaus,
I am the one who said that 400px is the max width for maps : because they are used on edit window for place selection. This is better to avoid scrolling each time you select a country.

Regarding sibling names, please fill in a RFE.

      Klaus,

One of the extensions for the Googlemap module that I am thinking of  will be an (optional) addition to placelist screen. This would show a map of Indonesia, with pins on all places on the next level (which could be islands in the case of Indonesia). This map would have the possibility to zoom in on certain areas, and on the next level would show a map of (one or more) islands.

Thanks, I have just installed the GoogleMap module and it looks really interesting. Such a feature like you described would be amazing! Good luck with it. Maybe I can help coding after end of july.

In Indonesian, Bataknese culture so many names for any relations, not just about age more about relation in family tree. Even i older than my cousin but his father is my father's elder brother, i call my cousin "abang" "my elder brother".
Some relation not just age or family tree, there is about marital status, family name, gender etc.
May in future implementation when we open "relation with me" so there are a table that containt person 1 call person 2 and person 2 call person 1.

The problem I am facing more and more while translating PhpGedView is that every ethnic in Indonesia has it's own names and rules for all this and I am not sure what will be the best way for a "Bahasa Indonesia" translation. Translation for every ethnic would be too much work and I am even not sure if there exist official country/language codes for all these ethnics.
In current SVN there exist already many strings for different relations to other persons. Did you take a look there? I am still busy translating the other strings first and didn't work so much with this problem in the last time.
I am not an expert and I am still looking for any comments and help or even some professional indonesian genealogist who know bit more about it.
