This might better be called brain problem, but I can't figure it out.  I have uploaded a file to http://www.adkins9.net/media/Washburn,LessieAgusta-ww1.jpg -- AND I can access the file online, BUT when I attempt to locate it in my directory, I can't find it!  I have tried the two file managers in the server control panel, AND using Filezilla.  I have looked for it by name and using a date sort, as I just uploaded it.  STILL no luck.
Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?

It looks like you're using the Media Firewall.

Look in the "index" directory that's been relocated to be outside the web-accessible file space on your server.  You'll probably find a "media" subdirectory there.

When you're using the media firewall, all media files you upload using PGV are automatically relocated into the protected media directory.

Follow-up:  If I want to keep a back-up of all the image files in my media directory, then would I need to back-up both the /media AND the /index/media directories?  Are some of the image files in one directory & some in the other?  Should I copy or move all the /media to the /index/media directory?  Or vice versa?  How does the software know where to look?  How does this work?

You should use the Manage Media page to move all of your unprotected media files to the protected (by the Media Firewall) directory.  There's a button for this on the Manage Media page.

You might want to protect the thumbnails too.  There's an option for this in the GEDCOM configuration, MultiMedia section.  Do this before you use Manage Media to move everything.
