I am currently trying to set up phpgedview but when I go through the initial configuration, the system doesn't save the admin details and so I am unable to log in to the site.

If attempting to install v4.2.3, are you using the stable release or the tarball download with considerably more updates as a serious privacy bug fix?
If your system is compatible with the PGV v4.2.3 release, you may wish to examine webtrees. http://www.webtrees.net. It has a truly foolproof install procedure and is a bit faster, especially on medium to large gedcoms. -Stephen

You must follow the WIKI instructions to the letter. While it is relatively easy, it isn't foolproof - hence the detailed instructions. http://wiki.phpgedview.net/en/index.php?title=Installation_Guide_v4.2.x
