    Hi

I am still on v4.22 and I want to delete a Source Citation -  can;t find where to do that..

Also is there a way of making Notes and Shared Notes visible only to Admin and editors?

    Thank you

    Jean

    Sorry

I mean deleting the source itself  - not the source citation.

Pretty easy, either click on the SOUR itself or go to LISTS > SOURCES and select your SOUR. Use the EDIT to delete or to change the information. Via LISTS, it will show you all references to that SOUR and you can modify or delete the reference is each before you delete.

    Hello there Stephen

    Thanks very much for that.

You might be able to help me a bit further - I would like to add administrative notes to the source like the contributor's email address / a URL link and other info that I don't want displayed when you view the record. What would be the best way to fo that?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Normally you would add those kinds of details as citations and text to a 'general source'. We do NOT expose our SOUR to non-registered users (default configuration setting for webtrees and PGV).  Have you 'over-specced' your SOURces, trying to add those that are too specific to each fact? Since just one INDI page might easily contain over 50 SOUR references, and should, at a minimum on a deceased person, contain at least two (BIRT-1 and DEAT-1), 'over-specced' SOUR creation will create, IMHO chaos.

I have only about 200 general sources:  SSDI, Indiana Births, indiana Deaths, Email from Cousin, Found online, etc
I provided detailed citations (PAGE tag, usually a URL if applicable) and text discussions on the general SOUR.

For instance, one SOUR is Pike County Recorded Births, 1890-1920,, There is a single detailed line for each birth, so I would copy it to the Citation line and it would read:

Arnold, William…..Arnold, David….Chappell, Lula….M…W…12 DEC 1899…A1…129  (Book and Page number for reference)

The same would be true for all census transcriptions from each Census year, 1800, 1810, 1820…..1930. Detailed citations and text modify the SOUR information.
    for instance:

SOUR     Title                                                  Author                                     INDI      FAM       Media  Shared Notes
    S1900 1900 USA Federal Census USA Federal Government     548   812 30       150

So, to accomplish what you desire I simply hide all SOUR to not expose email addys from cousins who send me personal information, etc.

There are no NOTE tags for general SOUR definitions, so I don't believe that you have no place to make notes or apply RESN tags to them unless you use General SOUR styles and add RESN to those you wish to block.

Perhaps someone else has a brilliant general configuration that can accomplish this, but I am not aware of any at this time.

    Cheers Stephen

Was wandering was the Citation field was for.

When you create a source from "Add a new Source Citation " on an individual's / family page there are Restriction option buttons available (is that the RESN tags that you are referring to?) .

Had a look the context help on it and it would seem that the Privacy option is the closest one to what  am wanting to do.  It says:
"Site administrators and GEDCOM administrators can view and edit the information. If the information applies to the user himself, he can also view and, assuming he has editing rights, edit it. It will be hidden from all other users regardless of their login status."

So if the entry was made by admin it still means that when the user views his record that he will see the source citation, doesn't it?

I also presume  that  all the components of that source including citations, text etc.. are restricted? So it might be better to create sources from the individual's / family page rather the adding an unlinked source from the admin menu, if you want to place restrictions.

One quick other question about organising source info & citations - say I have a "general source" and it itself has information from different sources, is this how you would organise it:.
From the individual/family  page  Add a new Source Citation- Create a new general source from the + icon:

    Abbreviation: Jean's Webste
    Title: Jean's Website

Save & then go back to Add a new Source Citation using the newly created source and add:
Citation Details: Cemetery Jean - Brisbane 2010
Text: say the URL to the web page/ email address
and then add the Privacy setting through  Restrictions to block it from general viewing.

Would it mean that the user would still see the "general source details" but none of the other info?

Hope that makes sense. It would mean that you could use the same "general source" over and over again (rather than creating a new one each time) but add more specific, appropriate details according to the situation or context.

Sort of. If the SOUR (Jean's Website) referred to a CEMEtery, then - in my data, the CEME would be the General primary SOUR (and not the secondary SOUR website].

You can always add a RESN tag (subordinate to the Level 1 or 2 SOUR tag) to block display of the SOUR contents at the INDI or FAM record, so it is not necessary to do it as you add/create the SOUR, but it is far easier to do so.

Let's look one more time at the concept of General SOUR use/construct:
    SOURce

If you add an RESN to the FACT/EVENT tag (level 2 RESN), then that entire FACT/EVENT will be subject to the level of privacy you specified. You can NOT add a RESN tag (level 3) to just the SOUR reference as it does not comply with the GEDCOM standard and as a result thereof, is not part of the GUI. If you manually add a 3 RESN privacy line, it will be ignored.

The only way to prevent the display of SOUR information is to set the general privacy to a restricted level.

Many thanks again Stephen for your time and patience in explaining the subtleties and how you use the SOUR tag, very helpful. So much to learn.

I think that I've worked out the best approach for my situation since I basically want to acknowledge and give credit to  the contributors  or general sources so that see it when they view the tree,  I'll create a series of general SOUR tags with just their names which will be the only source shown to authenticated users.

All other information will be contained in Source Citations, attached to the respective  SOURs ,  but restricted to the Privacy level so that I am the only one that can view and edit  them and I can then put any personal;data in the Text field if needs be.

I'll try the Wiki for more info on tags, facts, events, associates and whole bunch of stuff that I am only now discovering.

    Thanks again and kind regards

    Jean
