    forbidden

Not exactly helpful. Why is it forbidden? my age; day of week; file permissions?

I am midway through the new instal.php (great improvement) when this message arrives - top left hand corner in an otherwise blank screen.

    Can anyone help, please?

There is little reason to install PGV and no reason to install 4.2.4. At the very least you should be using v4.3-svn as shown in several other threads. May I suggest you look into webtrees (http://webtrees.net). It is still under active development, there has been virtually no effort expended on PGV in the last three + years.

    "Forbidden":

You probably have the permissions set incorrectly. Everything should be set to permissions 755, except for the file "config.php" and the directories "index" and "media".

Some documentation says to use permissions 644, but that doesn't work on all Linux systems, mine included. Mine absolutely requires 755, otherwise I get "Permission Denied".

The "index" and "media" directories, and all their contents, should be set to 777.

When PhpGedView is working properly and no more configuration changes are required, the file "config.php" can be set to 755.

Stephen is right: If you're just starting out, you should really consider using Webtrees. PhpGedView is basically dead, with almost no support and only very spotty bug fixing taking place.

      Gerry,

Given you comments and the fact that the maps no longer work in PhpGedView,
I am seriously considering transferring the site
(http://www.seligman.org.il/seligmantree/phpgedview/ ) to Webtrees. As my
technical experience is limited in the extreme, I do this with some
trepidation (following the principle of ‘if it works, don’t touch it’). I am
especially worried that certain aspects, such as the work on geographical
places and the media will not transfer smoothly.

Have you worked with the Webtrees program? Is there somebody you know who
could guide me through the process if I get into trouble?

And thank you for any pointers you can provide.

      All the best,

      Jon Seligman

    Jon:
I think you'll find the Webtrees user and developer community to be very helpful. Stephen Arnold, in particular, is very accommodating and will go out of his way to help you.

Stephen has been a long-time user of Webtrees, from its earliest days, and was also very active in the PhpGedView user community before that. He runs a very large (over 90,000 individuals) Webtrees site, and keeps a PhpGedView site just for helping people.

Other people in the Webtrees world who have been very helpful are Meliza Amity (user name used to be "meliza"), who lives in Israel, and "kosherjava" (I won't reveal his real name, because he asked me not to), who lives in the USA. Both run combined English and Hebrew sites, so that should be helpful to you. Meliza's site runs other languages such as Finnish too.
