Sorry if this sounds rude, but is this project still maintained? I ask because the site's page has no news since 2009, and all of the demo examples on sourceforge to go 404'd pages.

Rude, probably. This belongs in OPEN DISCUSSION, not help.
Dead? Did you look at these forums and the posting dates? Did you take a look at the downloads and dates? Did you browse the SVN? Did you check the WIKI? http://wiki.phpgedview.net
Is anyone maintaining the general information pages - NO, but I think the activity on the forum and the code is much more indicative of the status of a project. Had you posted this in the proper forum, you would have seen several threads that describe the whys and wherefores of the project's status.

Kinda silly to be sounding off about the wrong forum as the patient gasps its last…
Sadly, the replacement is just as ergonomically challenged as PGV, which ruins a lot of good effort.

Yes PgpGedView seems officialy dead as said here in french in the news http://www.forumphpgedview.fr/
Apparently the team is now working on Webtrees (https://launchpad.net/webtrees) but there is a last 2011 security release available for PhpGedView in the dowload files. (And as it's GPL anybody can fork it if he want)

Again. This is certainly NOT the case. It is in a bit of a hiatus as it finds its way through the current period. There have been lead developers leave previously and development stumbled and then progressed again. However, it will take a renewed interest by its originator, John, to get it moving.
In the mean time, or perhaps as an individual preference, there is an excellent fork of the project, now with over 5,000 code changes to enhance ease of use, presentation and privacy, within the http://www.webtrees.net project. Some longtime users of PGV may find certain features missing, as many items were stripped from the core code to enhance its overall efficiency. Some can be 'added back', and some can not. Almost all are non-essential, depending on your point of view and whether you are willing to adapt, or are rigidly stubborn. There are extensive discussions of these core code deprecated features on the webtrees forum.
However, PGV, as currently presented in SVN, is still an excellent product which has not reached EOL and to say so is, IMO, improper and incorrect. -Stephen
