My search of the forum didn't turn up this question.
I'm trying to indicate a person who has never married, no children. Google search found topic using _NMR (? some app) but that relates to a FAM record which obviously doesn't exist.

The - no children - tag is NMR (without the underscore) as it is a tag included in the spec. It is an INDI tag.
For the number of children, the NCHI is the correct tag. This is also an INDI tag. These tags should all be available in the list alongside - Add a new fact on the Personal Facts and Details tab. Get back to us if they are not.

Thanks. That's why I had problems finding. I forgot The "Number of" in front so didn't know I had the two tags. Sometimes it's hard to search this forum, knew I heard that before.

Sorry - slight correction needed…
NMR = Number of marriages, not "No children" (GEDCOM spec p.90)
NCHI = Number of children
You are correct that these are both INDI tags.
The only tag I've come across for "Never or Not married" is the unofficial one _NMR, which is a FAM tag designed to indicate unmarried couples. There is no tag to say an individual never married. It is always assumed that no marriage XREF (or _NMR tag) signifies exactly that - no marriage occurred or recorded for this individual.

Oops - now to correct myself slightly…
NCHI is EITHER an INDI or a FAM record. If used under an INDI, it signifies the number of children this person has parented (all marriages); if used under a FAM record it is the number of children parented by this couple/ marriage.

I'm using NMR and NCHI as INDI tags when I'm 100% certain, as oppose to not finding any records of either event. So, not used too often as I've no idea in many cases. Decided to use when person is deceased so no one takes offence (anything is possible!)

I use the NMR tag frequently and type in "No known marriages" to indicate just what you are looking for. If I know for certain that there was no marriage I type "Never married". I have quite a few maiden aunts! I also type in "No known children" for the NCHI tag both for INDIs and FAMs if that is applicable.

The only additional comment I'd make here is your variation from standard on the NCHI tag. The GEDCOM standard allows for only a COUNT (a numerical notation) for the extension of the NCHI tag, although a level 2 NOTE would be appropriate for your additional information.
NCHI {CHILDREN_COUNT}: =
The number of children that this person is known to be the parent of (all marriages) when subordinate to an individual, or that belong to this family when subordinate to a

Problem? You can use what you want, but it doesn't meet the standard. If you prefer words, I would suggest you use the option I proposed - NOTE tag is the appropriate location for text, not the NCHI tag itself.

also means you are likely to have problems exchanging the GEDCOM file with anyone else, or any other software.
Don't forget your other option is to create your own tag, either by using the EVEN (Event) tag, or by literally creating your own unofficial tag. You can use any 3 or 4 letter acronym as long as it starts with '_' (e.g. _MACS. Of course, that will still not be exchangeable with other software, but is more likely to be simply ignored, rather than cause errors. Gedcheck will also ignore it, as far as I know.
In my view these options if you MUST have this information recorded (personally I wouldn't) are 'safer' than mis-using a "real" tag.

Okay. Points accepted :) The reason it's important is I don't want to be searching for spouses and kids that never existed. In so many cases, I won't know that so when I do, it'll be helpful to note. And, avoids mismatching people up as I've been known to do…

Like the tips, bigone60. Prefer the words over Number as the tag seems to indicate is required. There's no help written for "?" so tried it anyway.

Stephen, if like Stuart I like words over numbers, can I assume that the only "problem" would be Gedcom check, non-critical error?

So, accomplish what you want, using proper tags and notations, wherever you know these things to be true:
0 INDI @I4321@
1 NAME Jane /Doe/
1 NMR 0
2 NOTE Never married. //redundant, but if you wish text
1 NCHI 0
-Stephen
The value of the NCHI tag is used to generate the "number of children" column in the individual and family lists, and on various charts.
A numeric value is expected.
I'd have to check the code to confirm, but a non-numeric value ("three" instead of "3") will either be ignored, or treated as zero.
I presume you only allow english visitors to your site. If you ever find non-english speaking relatives, this value wouldn't be translated for them.
