    mjm - 2010-05-01

I have two similar gedcom files, one I just recently upgraded - they are both version 4.2.3.

    1) When I list individuals for a specific last name letter I see that an individual with a married name is listed wih individuals of the same name but not always. Furthemore, it is not consistent between the two gedcoms.

    2) Also under some Last Name listings I see a partial collection of other last names.

I have gone through individual gedcom record and they all appear to be identical. I have looked at my data base and it also appears OK. I do have close to 2000 individuals so it is hard to look at them individually. However, I have checked a few of them.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Can you provide us with examples? Can we not see the sites ourselves? I can't understand your problem as described, except to say you may have each gedcom configured differently and access rights that vary.

I am sorry, but one of the PGV is behind a protected directory. The other one, although has privacy restriction, id at http://www.mekinda.com/phpgedview/ This is the gedcom I had a nightmare in upgrading. Here are just few examples:

    1) Go to J and then Junkin, second from top I445 shows married name Devitt, but listing individuals under D does not show Devitt

    2) Go to the 7th I386, shows married name Croft, but listing individuals under C does not show I386

    3) Go to the 16th I450, shows married name Patterson, but listing individuals under P does not show Patterson

Thanks for doing this on Saturday. I have more questions on this file which I will address later.

    Easy
You don't have Devitt as her last name, only as an incomplete married name.
PGV will auto-concatenate the _MARNM as Elizabeth /Devitt/ when you use the GUI and enter a married surname. You do not have the surname field populated, but rather simply in the raw (we would suspect) as
    2 _MARNM Devitt

This would then be found under GIVNames, not SURNames by PGV

BTW, I would suspect the same is true for the other examples, poorly entered, but I didn't go further.
    Other obvious issues on http://www.mekinda.com/phpgedview/individual.php?pid=I445&ged=GEDCOM.ged
    1) misuse of the CAUS tag under death, unless her visit to Verulam Cemetery precipitated her death by shock, heart attack or lightning. You should add the
    1 BURI tag  //and then
2 PLAC Verulam Cemetery,  Verulam Township, Ontario, Canada

    2) where's Elizabeth's husband? There should be a second DEVITT in your data.

    3) why is your GEDCOM named GEDCOM? Not really an error, but not promoting your primary SURNAME

Thanks for the ino. What is GUI?
Can I simply rename my gedcom and then import it. I guess I need to change the config.php.
That is the problem he is there when I log in but not otherwise.

GUI = standard computer term for Graphical User Interface. The EDIT NAME function, part of edit interface, in PGV.
The Married Surname fieid uses javascript to create and record the complete married name,
    2 _MARNM Elizabeth /Devitt/
rather than recording just the SURN portion as you have done, except you don't have it bracketed with "/", so PGV assumes these names to be the GIVN name. It is for this reason that none appear in the SURN listings.

Changing the name is not critical, but you will undoubtedly reimport your gedcom in the near future for other reasons and can then name it mekinda.ged or something similar.

That is the problem he is there when I log in but not otherwise.

I don't understand your comment. He (Mr Devitt) can't possibly be alive, nor even assumed alive, so you must have no DEAT Y or dates for events as he should certainly appear.

    That makes sense.
Can I just rename the gedcom file to something else and simply import it. What about the media links - I ran into this problem before. Do I answer NO to keep media links?

When you import a PGV-created or 'tuned' gedcom, which already contains the media OBJE tags, you always answer NO to media links.
Yes, you could do this but not necessary. You may wish to fix your MARNM issues before reimporting, or fix them with some GREP in a text editor or, deleted all of them and then use the ADMIN > Perform Batch Updates > Add Missing Married Names.to recreate them. You have relatively small gedcoms.
