    Hi

I got completely fed up with my free web host - their website and mine have been down for 2 days now and not a word from them so I finally got a new web host  (a paid one). I haven't been able to get the latest GEDCOM file  from their server or do a backup.

.So I am busy doing a fresh install and when I imported the GEDCOM file from  my local computer  and it does not seem to have imported my current users.

Have I missed something in the installation or import of the file?

    Thank you.

    Jean

These items (and others) are stored only in your database.  Unless you can get access to your old site (or the database at the very least), then you are stuck.

    Hello Jean -

Just happen to see your post after checking for a reply to one of my own.

FYI, the User information you seek is stored in the database tables as the are created in PGV. This info would not be in a local file copy of your GED, only your genealogy facts are there. Changes since this file was used/imported into PGV are also on the previous server.

You also don't say whether you will be allowed access to go back to your old host or not. If so, you might be able to export your DB tables to get more data out and be able to use in your new install.

Of course, a suggestion here is to investigate/develop a file backup strategy for situtaions such as this. Hopefully others will also give more insight on what you might expect from such a process, and what might be gained from the effort involved.

    Cheers for the advice, guys

I now do a back up on a regulad basis - GEDCOm after all changes completed  for the day - DB also.

Still not able to access the free web server but I did a dump of the tables on my computer and imported that into the new site. Only one user missing, a test one created on the day the day the free provider stopped working.

All seems to have gone well - the only problem (I hope) is that the special characters are showing as ASCII, I think - ie É instead of É  -  is there a setting where I can adjust that or do I  just reimport the GEDOM file?

    Thanks Greg

Followed your instructions - chose the all options - the É was still showing so I imported the GEDCOM again and that seems to have fixed it.

    Thanks again

    Hi

Access to my old site the free one suddenly came back tonight.  I am keeping it as a test site. Damn it,  it's gone down again.

I'd like to disable access to the site for all external users  and in not wanting any unexpected results, can I ask as to what be the best way to achieve this,

I am wary of deleting them in case another series of emails are sent off so I tried changing the Access level for one of my test user accounts to None but I can still login and access the site.

I've also made back ups of the database and GEDCOM file. Can you please tell me what the most efficient way to erase the present GEDCOM data from the program..

    Thanks again

    Jean

Change the name of the directory in which PhpGedView is installed.  This effectively changes the URL that you need to use to access PGV.

Unless you have a most unusual configuration, that's all that would need to be done.

"unusual" : hard-coded server URL or login URL in config.php.  These fields should always be empty.

    Hi Gerry

This is what's in my www/config.php:

$SERVER_URL='http://www……..200u.com/'; //- the URL used to access this server

    Should I just remove I the http://www……..200u.com/

As you can see I installed the program in the www directory so can't change it's name.

    Hi

Sorry to bother you again - did do a search but could not find answers to my queries. If instructions are posted elsewhere please let me know.

Wanting to delete specific registered users from free webserver and not experience any adverse effects (emails sent etc…) - if I delete them using PhpAdmin from table pgv_users rather than from  within PGV, is that the best way to go? Would I need to do anything else?

"Change the name of the directory in which PhpGedView is installed. This effectively changes the URL that you need to use to access PGV."

If  I create to a new directory (www/gen) and move all the program files  to it, will you please let me know that I have this right:

    1) Do I need to run the install wizard again as the paths will not be right?

    2) PGV will still work won't it with the URL to access the login page www.website.com/gen/login.php?

    3) Change Path and name of GEDCOM on server from the admin config page to: ./index/gen/………GED - if I don't need to reinstall.

Is there anything else that I need to adjust?

    Thank you so much

    Jean

<<Wanting to delete specific registered users from free webserver and not experience any adverse effects (emails sent etc…)>>

Consider yourself lucky.  In 4 years of using PGV, I have never managed to get it to send a single email.  I've given up trying and no longer care about it…..

Deleting the rows from the table should do what you want.

As to your other questions, I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to achieve, but if you leave the server_url and login_url fields blank, PGV will work out the correct values 99.9% of the time.  You only really need this when you are using https or have some complicated subdomain arangement.

    You're a marvel Greg.

On my free server  - have just deleted my unwanted users, moved PGV to another directory and all seems to be working perfectly. Didn't have to touch a single setting. Phew!

Well once I get my skills up who knows, I might get you to change your mind about the mail.

Say is there a story behind  "fisharebest" ? I suppose that you've got a huge big aquarium at home with your "fishes" lurking around and providing you with constant inspiration.

Can't thank all you Guys enough - for all your help, much appreciated.

Please one other question - to erase the GEDCOm on the free server -
it is best to Create a new GEDCOM or Upload say the President's one and have overwrite the present GEDOM file.

    Merci bien

    Jean

It's the other way around - I visit the fish in their own home (in my scuba gear).
