This tag has a large text field in Source however I can't find way to have text on more than one line. (I've not used PUBL previously).
I want the Source in the entry to display on every record it's used. I use the <AUTH> tag which displays in the List of Sources but not on the records.
<TITLE> Name of the article
<PUBL> City Newspaper
Journal of Uncle Sam
what displays is
<TITLE> Name of the article
<PUBL> City Newspaper Journal of Uncle Sam
I don't use the REPO part of Sources

Are you talking about printing to a report or how to save the data properly in the GEDCOM?
GEDCOM tags are used to transfer data from one application to another and in general (IMHO) do not have markup embedded within them, so I would not embed a NL (Carriage Return) in the tag.
The GEDCOM standard suggests that the data placed in <PAGE> should be in the form of a label and value pair, such
as Label1: value, Label2: value, with each pair being separated by a comma. I would follow this suggestion for <PUBL> also so that the data was saved as:
01 AUTH Name of article author(s)
01 PUBL TITLE: Title of Article, PERIODICAL: Title of Periodical, DATE: Day Month Year

Thanks kfnordan. I did mean to view on screen. I like PUBL as it appears with every Sour on the Indi records. PERI (or whatever tag is) will do for the "Journal" info. While it won't appear anywhere, it'll be consistent location. The "Journal" portion indicates to me the Source is hard copy, in my possession. The same entry w/o "Journal" was found online and I haven't verified yet if it was in newspaper or just a funeral home entry.

I don't know anything about the online display, but I would think that little gets modified between the database and the display for most tags.
The Labels I used in the PUBL tag "PERIODICAL" and "DATE" are mine and not a standard in any way. "PERI:" could be used. The MLA style for sources uses "Print" and "Web" for medium of publication so the PUBL tag could be the following for a Web page article:
1 PUBL PERIODICAL: Title of Periodical, DATE: Day Month Year, MEDIUM: Web
and a print article:
1 PUBL PERIODICAL: Title of Periodical, DATE: Day Month Year, MEDIUM: Print
other MEDIUM labels would be: Film, DVD, Television, Radio, CD, Microsoft Word File, PDF File, etc
Again your Labels could be anything you want, as long as it can be uniquely identified within the context of the use.
I realize that this does not answer your initial question, however I hope to have a proposal for a change (for Webtrees) to expand the entry of SOURce records so that these <PUBL> and <PAGE> "Value Pairs" can be part of GUI data entry for these tags. For example the PUBL tag for an article would be built from a concatenation of three data entry fields and labels.

okbigkid: Yes, I do realize that but chose not to use REPO.
kfnordan : "online" I mean what PGV displays in a record. For a Source entered with a fact/event, it shows TITLE and PUBL, all other tags are shown only when viewing details of the SOurce. Therefore, PUBL/TITLE are the two I'm playing with to get the results I want. 1) show the Title I'm using (I've come up with a consistent formula that suits me) and 2) to identify the PUBL which *for my purposes* is the obit, newspaper, etc. It's the addition of the "Journal of Uncle Sam" that I wanted underneath those publications that are part of this journal and I'd like it viewable rather than having to always click to see the Source details.
It's an important element in trying to connect the dots (link people together) in doing my research.

Sorry that should be without the leading zero.
1 AUTH Name of article author(s)
1 PUBL TITLE: Title of Article, PERIODICAL: Title of Periodical, DATE: Day Month Year
Sorry again (wish I knew how to undo an entry).
This is probably better.
1 AUTH Name of article author(s)
1 TITL Title of Article
1 PUBL PERIODICAL: Title of Periodical, DATE: Day Month Year

Mac
The 'proper' form for this kind of repository of accumulated data, documents, source materials, photos and notes would be
REPO = YOU
