This is how an example entry may display on a page:

King William I House of Normandy King of England
    Prefix: King
    Given Names: William I
    Surname: House of Normandy
    Suffix: King of England

Is there a way to turn off the bits from 'Prefix' thru to 'Suffix'?

I should have added that I want to use 'Prefix' thru to 'Suffix', but do not want to display them on the page.

I'm not sure I understand your question.  Could you rephrase it?  Your clarification is worded the same - I can't make sense of 'thru to'.  Do you mean 'and'?  Perhaps this is a regional expression, but in context 'through to' would seem to include the entire name.

Do you want to do this operation for only William I or for all persons in a Gedcom?

If you just want to suppress display of the redundant work "King" in this case only, I'd suggest changing the entry.  I'm likely wrong, and I'm sure no New Zealander would want to use the construction, but is the honorific for a King or Queen "HRH"?  This would leave it

HRH William I House of Normandy King of England

    Which scans a bit better.

In recent PGV versions nicknames are quoted in the name, so you could have

William I "the Conqueror"  of England

But this isn't quite right either, is it?

In this case I suppose King would be an occupation and House of Normandy would be in a note.

Wikipedia gives as alternative names William I of England and William the Conqueror.

Which can be handled nicely as alternative names in PGV.

Although PGV automatically creates the NAME record from the NPFX, SPFX, GIVN, etc., this is just a default, and you can enter your own value for NAME.  Just click on the little "edit" icon to disconnect the NAME from the other fields.

Now, the value in the NAME field is the one that is used for display.  The sub-fields are only used for sorting/filtering/etc.

    So, have something like this:

    1 NAME King William I
    2 NPFX King
    2 GIVN William
    2 SURN House of Normandy
    2 NSFX of England

    etc.

What I really wanted was to have JUST the name displayed and not the subfields of Prefix, Given Names, Surname, and Suffix under the name.

So it would look like this:

King William I House of Normandy King of England

    and not like this:

King William I House of Normandy King of England

    Prefix: King
    Given Names: William I
    Surname: House of Normandy
    Suffix: King of England

To do that just use the NAME field as fisharebest described, and don't enter anything in the other fields.

Will doing that have a detrimental affect on search results?

<<What I really wanted was to have JUST the name displayed and not the subfields of Prefix>>

To do this, "disconnect" the NAME from the name components as described above, then set the subfields to empty values.  PGV won't try to recreate them unless you edit the name again.

PGV works fine if these subfields are not present, so will not affect search results.
