the media folder in de .zip file of the backup process contains each media file as many times as there are Gedcom's. As I have 9 gedcoms, each media file occurs 9 times in the media folder, resulting in extremely large .zip files of e.g. 122 Mb. It seems to me that this is a very inefficient solution, consuming much time and space.

Sorry, you lost me. I have but ONE (1) media objects file and it supports 5 GEDCOMs. Why would you wish to have 9 of them. I also successfully use media-firewall with the one folder and further, that same media folder supports both my PGV installation and my webtrees installation. Multiple installations and multiple gedcoms, all with one media folder (with over 3500 objects). -Stephen

I have also just one media objects file (supporting 9 GEDCOMs). My .zip backup file shows evidently 1 media folder in which each object is present as many times as I have GEDCOMs. I could send you that folder, maybe the contents shows better what I mean than my words.

The backup utility, really a waste of time IMHO, works as designed, looping through each GEDCOM as though they are separate entities and will create a media backup for each folder linked in the configuration (since each config can be distinct). Otherwise, it would be unable to backup media should you not use a unified media folder.
I never use the backup for this and other reasons, but rather make my own clones via Carbon Copy Cloner, cron jobs, mirrored drives and Time Machine and periodic SQL dumps. There is also a utility for those. -Stephen
