Did you Accept all of those changes you made? If you're making a lot of changes, you should set your account's privileges to "auto accept". When you change your account privileges this way, any *new* changes you make will automatically be copied into the database without further action on your part. Old changes that are waiting for Admin approval will still need to be accepted.
Do the media files show up on the Manage Media page? Are they linked to the proper database records (Person, Family, Source)?

Glad that worked. The WIKI and other help, as well as these forums, advise repeatedly tol admins that 777 is necessary on MEDIA and INDEX folders.

If you use Media Firewall, go to the Gedcom Configuration menu and set that value (Use media firewall?) to No. Save. Set it back to Yes. Save.
It's a quick thing to try, but if the pictures are not showing up on the Manage Media page, that's probably not the problem.
I understand about the nightmare. Keep plugging away and you'll get it right.
Also - double-check your Media directory settings on the Gedcom Configuration page. My instinct is that's the problem.
And your permissions on the media directories, full R/W. 777

cmod to 777 did the trick. I kept using the function in manage media to set permissions which set them to 644

But when you go to media.php and click on t0 correct Media read/write/execute permissions it sets the direcories at 644. All is well that ends well
