I know there are a number of routines that are advisable to perform regularly, unfortunately I am remiss on some of them.
One is to back-up the GEDCOM, and then to again import that same GEDCOM, which allows PGV to "re-build." The only caution I can recall is to NOT (something?) the media files? Anything else? Can someone refresh my memory? Many thanks.

If I recall correctly, I should also empty the /index/cache/ directory and allow it to rebuild itself.
Is there somewhere in the wiki on "periodic maintenance" that I haven't found?

Backing up your site routinely is necessary, even if your ISP provides backups. The backup should be off-site and the communication should be encrypted (if you have private data). Depending on the security of the off-site storage it may be necessary to encrypt the backups.
As far as i know, it shouldn't be necessary to rebuild PGV periodically. Performance may improve if Gedcom sync is turned off, and that requires a manual export of the Gedcom if you need a current Gedcom. But re-importing a current Gedcom should not result in any net change to the database.
Normally cache files should be self-maintaining. If PGV's are not that is a bug.

Here's an article explaining the "Keep Media Links" setting of the Gedcom import. This should not normally appear in version 4.2.3. http://wiki.phpgedview.net/en/index.php?title=Import_GEDCOM#Keep_Media_Links.3F
If you want more info on backups let me know.
George
Thank you.
