"Search
Can one do a search using the individual/family ID numbers?"
Thats an odd question Jean - why don't you just try it???

Must have been doing something wrong before which is why I enabled the GUI which I thought was the ID number.
Could have been trying to find a deleted Fam ID as I got - No results found after typing f35 in search box. Also probably mistook the numbers displayed on the left when viewing Families/All as their ID numbers rather than the number in the list.
Is there a way to bring up a list showing family ids (sorted by ID Number) with husband & wife with names?

This option adds a _UID field whenever the record is imported or editied.
By turning the option to No, you don't create any more.
If you don't want to see them, use the global fact setting of the privacy settings.
I recommend that you enable this option (but don't display them). They are very useful for options such as merging gedcoms, which you may want to do in the future

I've got "Display and Layout/ Names/Show ID numbers next to names" turned on.
A sortable FAM column does come up when I click to view a family with the same surname from choosing
Families/ (View) All. That's great. That's what you mean, isn't it?
What I was after though was for reference and quick access was a complete list of families with hubbies & wives ordered by family ID rather than alphabetically - probably need to do a join query on the tables through phpMyAdmin - wouldn't know where to start.
Can always construct one manually from browsing the pgv_families table and doing a corresponding search in PGV.
Ta very much

When you view the ALL option it has 2 columns - Surname & Spouses, I wouldn't expect it also have a Family ID column as it groups families by surnames.
You can search for a family by entering its ID in the search box but to find an ID you need to look it up using the alphabetical list.
Not suggesting this as a feature but you could also have View Family by ID groups - say Family 1 to 20, Family 21 to 40 and so on and displayed thus:
F1 - POTAIN - Jean (i1) & BEAUTIFUL Babe (i2)
F2 - DOE - Whatshisname (i45) & NONAME Jill (i78)
What I am asking for though (for my own use) is I suppose the sql statement that I can run using phpMyAdmin to bring about such a result because when you view the pgv_families table you have the f_id but f_husb and f_wife display the individuals' ID numbers. and not their names.
Hope that makes sense.

Jean, its not ignorance, just inexperience. Please spend a little more time learning how PGV works, and what it can really do for you, before you leap to the conclusion that it needs changing, or that you need to write complicated queries. It is a VERY powerful tool - far too powerful to have a manual that explains everything in a simple way. Not to mention that it is constantly (as in almost every day) changing and improving.
You will learn more, and remember it better if you experiment, look around, click on some things, test some settings. Thats how most of us have learned what we know - and we're all still learning.
Don't forget that PGV has an extensive (if occasionally imperfect) set of Help screens; and then there's the WIKI pages too.
Here's an example, that you could find if you looked around . Go to Lists (on the main menu) - Branches. Its another great way to view all the families of one name.

I disagree with you a little bit, It's laziness and an inability to comprehend the intricacies of the program on my part, I've been so involved with having to shift servers and getting things right without ever having a proper play around to fully explore the features..
I do generally consult the Wiki and search the forum before posting and I hope that my enquiries haven't exasperated you guys, put it down to the actions and reactions of a eager beginner full of enthusiasm and in recognising the excellence of the program.
It is sometime easier to fire a post than to think about an issue yourself and as you say familiarity will come about through trying things out and eliminate silly questions .
Cheers

The _UID and RIN display even though I set them to "show only to admin users" in the global fact privacy settings. How do I stop these fields from displaying?

If you set them to ""show only to admin users" they will do just that - display ONLY to admin users. If you want them hidden from everybody, set it to "hide even from admin users".

i've tested global fact privacy settings "show only to admin users" and "hide even from admin users" for uid and rin and they display to admin and non-admin.

What version of PGV?
I'm using 4.2.3 and don't see this problem.
Are other privacy settings working OK? Any errors reported in your PGV logs?
When you change these settings they are stored in a file in your /index/ folder, so it (and all thise files) must have full read/write (777) permissions at all times.

Is "Enable Privacy" set to "Yes" in your GEDCOM configuration (first item in the group "Access and Privacy")?

The family list - click on the ID column heading to sort.
If you don't have an ID column, it is because you disabled it in the gedcom config settings.
Thank you Greg

Yes

The family list has an "all" option, as well as A, B, C, etc.
If this isn't what you want, you'll have to explain more.
When you view the ALL option it has 2 columns - Surname & Spouses, I wouldn't expect it also have a Family ID column as it groups families by surnames.
