Is there another "fact" field that I can use like nickname that doesn't show up in names? Notes is heavy handed..

Yes, add a Feature Request for it. Someone might see it and think its a great idea and add the code. Thats pretty much the way new features get implemented - it needs someone with the combination of an interest in the feature PLUS the coding skill and time to devote to the work. If you don't raise the FR, then it WILL get forgotten.
As for an alternative to a Note, nothing I can think of, other than a Custom Event - but a nickname is not really an Event is it, and it will then appear in the Events list, not the Header.

I want to include nicknames for searching purposes, but I don't want them to display. Is there a way to disable that?
