I downloaded phpgedview the other day and installed it on my hosting provider's server. The account I have is on win2k and I have php and mysql available.
I istalled phpgedview as per the readme and everything seemed okay until I imported my family tree. I cannot display any data. The only name that pears is the one that I assigned in the config as the default person.
I clicked around to see if there was data elsewhere. Mostly the data was missing (Individual List). I started to receive errors (Family List) like :
Notice: Undefined variable: alpha in <P>E:\...\Inetpub\wwwroot\phpgedview\famlist.php on line 51
<P>
I spent quite a bit of time on this forum and on the FAQs. Here is a summary of what I have tried:
-- check for gedcom file errors. Everything seems complete.
-- tried file format: Resaved at UTF-8 from ANSI
-- checked indexing. I have files like: familyname.GED_index.php. I looked at this resulting file with notepad and it seems to be okay.. no obvious erros, etc, anyway. My ged file is 1.5 meg and the resulting index file is 1.9 meg
-- file and mysql versions.. same issues result
-- tried phplauncher on my local machine: could not run buildindex.php (I cannot find that file?). Same errors. presidents.ged DID work fine, however.
I did notice that the indexing of the presidents file had some results under FAMILY that my file indexing did not.
-- ran presidents.ged on the site. It also runs just fine. I can assume that the php, mysql, etc settings are fine with my host.
My father is actually the family tree master. He sent me the exported gedcom file from the software package he uses (Family Tree Maker for Windows v10? -- from the ged file output). He says this program does not seem to have many options available for exporting and his export does upload and work on myfamily.com
I am thinking that if must be an issue with the exported file format.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Jim

I downloaded Heredis Standard in the hopes that I could import my gedcom and then export it in a more standard format.
Heredis could not import the ged file. It said it was not in ged format.
I can only assume FTW is taking some liberties with the gedcom format or my father has some information tracked in his family tree that is causing these issues.
I know my Dad is not married to FTW since, according to the gedcom file, he is married to me mum :) I'll see if he has any interest in trying another application like Heredis or Legacy.
Arne, I sent you a link to a copy of the .ged file I am using.

Jim

Jim, at second glance I realise that the file isn't GEDCOM at ALL, because it doesn't use gedcom tags.
Yes, it doesn't use gedcom tags.
The end tag is:
0 TRAILER
but iyt has to be:
0 TRLR
most of the other tags are alos wrong, so it will probably take me all night to list all the wrong tags, what they are, and what they are supposed to be.
Take this tiny sample:
in the gedcom file it is:
0 @S34787@ SOURCE
1 TITLE Complete.GED
1 REPOSITORY
2 CALL_NUMBER
3 MEDIA Other
0 TRAILER
To be in GEDCOM tags it has to be:
0 @S34787@ SOUR
1 TITL Complete.GED
1 REPO
2 CALN
3 MEDI Other
0 TRLR
But still when translated from pseudo-descriptions to real tags, there are still some fundamental problems with the GEDCOM tags.
These are massive and serious problems ;-((

This is a simple setting in FTM
On export select GEDCOM from the list
keep the "abbreviate tags" checked (this seems to be the source of your problem) Keep destination setting of FTM, Version 5.5 and ANSI charset.
It seems that the default settings were not used. Before manually changing the GEDCOM, try re-exporting with the above settings (do not check the "indent records" checkbox)
Let me know if this worked.

Thanks Arne
I downloaded Gedcom Explorer just now and I can see what you are talking about now. I will make some changes with gedex and see if that helps.. I am sure it will.
Thanks for all your help. I'll post again when and if I get this fixed.
Cheers,
Jim

Okay, success.. albeit limited
I used Gedcom Explorer (Thanks Arne!) to compare my FTW file against gencom 5.5.. I had to make quite a few changes and I lost some data but the tools in gedex made is fairly simple.
This is not ideal since I lost some data. Ideally, FTW will export something closer to gedcom 5.5.
kosherjava: I just saw your post. I will call my Dad and work through a new export with him and try that.
Thanks everyone for your input.

In the meantime I also replaced most of the pseudo description with regular gedcom tags and tried to import the gedcom into phpGedView using PHPLaunch - and like you I found, that the import was a success.
I think I managed to avoid loss of data, but not all problems with the gedcom was solved - still most of the problems was solved.
I'm happy to hear, that the sun again is shining :-)

My father did a re-export last night with the settings you suggested and it worked much better. There were still a few issues but nothing too critical and nothing Gedcom Explorer could not repair.
Thanks again

I just found this threat after searching for "Family Tree Maker".
I downloaded and ran the gedcom file through it but this did not resolve the issues.
https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=1856294
This is strange since many other folks seem to be able to use FTM without too many problems.
I'll keep looking though.
Jim
My gedcom was exported from FTM and I have no trouble with it.

Uuppsss...
If I think how many problems there seem to be with FTM I think I don't want to throw my $29,00 out of the window :-(
Isn't there a free test version of FTM???
bye, Kurt
