You should be OK with this, but we normally recommend that you relocate the Index and the Media directories to be outside the web-addressable file space on your server.
The Help text gives ample information on relocating the Index directory. Basically, you make a copy of the existing Index directory, then change the PGV configuration (use the Install wizard). When things are working properly, you can delete the contents of the existing Index directory. You still need to keep it, and it should still have 777 permission.
The Media directory can be relocated too. You need to read up on the Media Firewall, which handles browser requests for media files that aren't web addressable. You still need the existing Media directory, and it also needs 777 permission. It just won't have any media files in it.

So I have seen numerous settings. I had a working install and then changed the permissions and could no longer open files.
I have set index and media to 777
All other files and directories are set to 755.
Any concerns about security with these settings?
I should state that this is on PHPGedView 4.2.3
