I see in the Gedcom standard {AFN} A unique permanent record file number of an individual record stored in Ancestral File. but no mention if this is numeric only or can be alpha-numeric.
I'm using the tag to refer back to a unique spot in a reference source. I wish to keep it separate from the source; its purpose is mostly for me and hidden from others.

If you visit the familysearch.org site and look at their AFN system, you'll see these are exclusive AlphaNumeric designators for each individual. While I suppose you could use this tag for another purpose, this would be counter to the gedcom standard, and entirely unnecessary as there are other tags more appropriate for what you intend. Also, since this is something unique to you, your privileges and your gedcom, why not simply create a custom tag that is easy to remove upon export?
