Hi, I am completely new to online genealogy, and thus I have no GEDCOM file.  It looks like phpGedView is basically a front-end for a pre-existing GEDCOM file.  Is there a way to generate a family tree completely independently from writing the GEDCOM file "behind the scenes"?  I've tried clicking around some in phpGedView, but haven't hit on the right thing yet.  Basically my question is, "Can phpGedView be used as an online family tree creation tool?"

    Thanks.

Well, I guess I figured out how to do it, by clicking the "Close Relatives" link on an individual (the "root" individual to start with) and going from there.  It's sort of a weird interface that I have to click "Accept Changes" to make the changes permanent -- one might expect the "Save" button on a new person entry to actually enter the new person in the database.  This is esp. un-intuitive when I add a new person and after the Save screen it goes back to the original person, and I have to click on the added individual again to "Aceept Changes" for their addition.  Maybe I just haven't looked at the interface enough to understand it all...

Also, while the text fields show the new people, the pedigree chart doesn't show the links to children -- is there something else I need to do?

DOH.. Nevermind again.  I was looking at the tree backwards.  I thought it would fan out to children, not fan out to parents.... I get it.

If you are starting your genealogy from scratch, I strongly recommend my project, GDBI.  It works directly with PGV.  Most genealogy programs create their own database, which you export to GEDCOM, and then upload to PGV.  GDBI cuts out these steps.  On the other hand, it doesn't have all the features other programs have.

GDBI is explained on the PGV home page.  On the left column, click on "Edit Online".  You can also go to the GDBI home page: http://gdbi.sourceforge.net/

The descendancy chart will show all children, grand children, great grand children, etc.

The family page is also a good way to navigate the tree and add people to your database.  You can get the family page by clicking on any of the "view family" links on the individual page, or by using the "family with spouse" link in the mouseover popup boxes on any of the charts.

Since you are starting from scratch, the GDBI is a great way to edit the data online.

The editing features of PhpGedView are designed to work in a multiuser collaborative editing environment.  So that many people can make changes, and those changes are then reviewed and can be undone before they are made public.  In the future I will be adding a user setting that will allow their changes to skip the review/accept stage.

You also don't have to accept changes on an individual basis.  You can accept all of the changes at once.  When there are pending changes to be accepted, a link "review/accept changes" will show up at the bottom of the page if you are logged in.  This link will take you to a page where you can undo changes, accept changes, or accept all of the pending changes for a particular gedcom.
