I storied Chinese names under the Alias in FamilyTreeMaker which didn't import into PGV properly. Has PGV since made the correction or I just have to do it all over again (for 1,300+ souls?)
In the input form, for names:
Given Names -
Surname -
Hebrew Given Names -
Hebrew Surnames -
Romanized Given Names -
Romanized Surname -
..
Ok, what's the best way for me to carry on inputing Chinese names? - this is a must for me.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Thank you.
Irene

Does Family Tree Maker actually support Chinese? I wasn't aware that it supported anything other than the basic western European character sets.
If you want to use Chinese names, you will probably need to abandon Family Tree Maker and stick with PhpGedView or Webtrees for all of your database and data entry needs.
If I were you, I'd put the Chinese names into the Hebrew name fields. Just because these fields are labelled "Hebrew" doesn't mean that you can't use them to store names in a character set other than Hebrew. Just be consistent.
You'd use the "Romanized" name fields to contain the Chinese name in English letters when the main name fields contain Chinese. Again, you need to be consistent here.

Thank you Cana.
FTM (ver 2003) doesn't support Chinese, but when the NJStar communicator is turned on, the Chinese characters showed properly in FTM. I tried to import few times, with the NJStar on, but to no success. If FTM were to offer an online version, I'd have stayed!
Is there a way I could change the labels in PGV (without getting a computer science degree), like 'Hebrew' to 'Chinese'?
Thank you.

You'd need to create a new file, "languages/extra.en.php". In that file, you would need to define replacement language definitions for every language variable that contains the word "Hebrew".
Are you sure it's worth doing that?

Guess from now on the Hebrew equals to Chinese … hmmmm .. I do have a relatively large group of individuals who are Jewish !! Romanized = Chinese then.
On a side note, is PGV more for the developers (or at least competant enough with computers/codings, etc ..) than da end users like me?? Would Geni.com serves me better?? Thank you.

Oh .. Cana, I just want to make sure the field 'Romanized' is ok for being used for Chinese characters? Actually PGV is ok with Chinese characters? I don't think I have another life left to fix this mess one more time! Thank you so much.

Of course, PGV is OK with Chinese characters.
If doesn't matter what alphabet you use in each of the three types of "name" fields, as long as you're consistent. In other words, if you choose to reserve the "Romanized" fields for Chinese, that's perfectly OK. Just don't ever put any names with Latin letters into the "Romanized" fields.
"Romanized" and "Hebrew" are just labels for these fields. Of course, the "Romanized" and "Hebrew" names have their own GEDCOM tags that reflect these field titles, but that doesn't matter, as long as you never mix up the usage of the fields.
I wouldn't say that PhpGedView is more for "developers" than any other software. There are lots of users out there who haven't got a clue about programming in any sort of language. They're simply "users". Some of them are more adept than others at understanding the weird lingo used by many developers, but that doesn't make them better "users".
