A user has entered this under the adoption tag:

    1 FAMS @F545@
    1 ADOP
    2 DATE 1954
    2 PLAC Pukekohe
    2 FAMC @Paton@
    3 ADOP BOTH

The FAMC entry was entered as a name that does not have any relevance to any family in the Gedcom.
This causes the page to hang… that is, it says loading data and stops.
By removing the FAMC entry, the page loads ok.

Is there any way of stopping a user from just entering a name instead of a family number when editing the file? The help file contains no information on what to do in this field when clicking the ? next to Family as a child.

The GUI edit interface pretty clearly defines what kind of information the field is looking for, providing a look-up function link adjacent to the field. This would be your need to:
    1) review entries BEFORE approving their addition to your data, and
    2) using this error to train/retrain your user.

Unfortunately the person entering the information was a complete newbie and because she entered a name instead of using the lookup function, it screwed things up a bit so the page would not even load. Kinda made it difficult to review when it would not load.
Fortunately by editing the raw gedcom, I was able to find where the problem lay, and correct it.

And yes, I do 1) and 2). Just wondered if there was a way of preventing the same problem again.
Do you have on your site a help file for the adoption tag?

I see your problem. I would never see this as I use RAW to review every data change made by users as I find it so much faster to make necessary changes to the submissions via RAW. Of course if you do as most would, and click on the View Changes, the page would not load.

However, I would expect this to be a one off with this user and a perfect opportunity to explain the procedure (as adoption itself is pretty rare and this is one of the few tags that would create this effect).

Yes, there is no HELP for that particular field, but as I said, pretty self-explanatory with the lookup as long as someone is familiar with genealogy terminology. Write some help and we'll get it posted. DIdn't check the wiki if any is there.
