Strange things happen for the GEDCOM file for one person. It grows !!! - the mulitmedia objects list is getting bigger all the time, and I can't see why. The person is listed 4 times in the allpersons list, but when I click any of them I land on the same person. Can anyone tell me if it's safe to edit the file raw. GEDCOM looks like this:

This most likely has occurred upon import, where you have indicated you should KEEP MEDIA, instead of not doing so. The proper answer to GEDCOMS that contain PGV media OBJE references is NO, do not keep.
Resolution is relatively painless thanks to Greg's batch modifier program. Go to ADMIN > Perform batch updates/edits on your GEDCOM > Remove duplicate links.
You may have to run the program several times to remove all these duplicates, but it will clean them from the GEDCOM database.

Kent, do follow Stephen's advice and use 'remove duplicates" rather than raw edit. Much safer. But even after you do that tidy up, you still look to have another problem with that GEDCOM snippet. Cleaned-up it looks like this, as far as I can tell:

You seem to have two level 2 OBJE tags that are not subordinate to any level 1 event. They are likely to appear as subordinate to the CHAN tag as written now! Presumably they belong to the BIRT tag? In which case the GEDCOM should look like:

Thanks both of you for fast and clear answers. At the moment I can't do the batch update - I'm still at 4.1.4 and can't upgrade to PHP5 so I will first have to move to an whole new system).

When you say "can't upgrade to PHP5" are you quite sure? Might be worth double-checking with your web host as some don't make it very clear as an option. Sometimes its just a php.ini setting to switch versions.
If you really can't, then definitely you should find a new host. PGV 4.2.3 is miles away from 4.1.4 now, and besides, PHP 5 has been out for literally years! A long way past the point any web host can claim to be waiting for a stable release before they upgrade!

I run my own server - on Fedora Core 4 and that is from before the PHP5 era. Project is to move PGV to new webserver…

Thanks. Didn't see that. Maybe I'll stay on FC4 after all (its's an old kernel though).
