The backup utility DOES NOT WORK. Do not depend on it for anything.
Despite the programmers' best efforts, this utility never effectively made the transition from index to DB. There are several older bug reports on this. Backup your Database using a gui tool, like phpMyAdmin, or a control panel if supplied by your ISP and use Export to put a copy of the gedcom facts only into the Index folder and/or Download to put a copy onto your local machine.
