    I was able to hide showing NOTES to the Public, but Cause Of Death does not seem to work. Even hiding from Admin does not work.   Any thoughts?

    I imported the gedcom from Family Tree Maker. Even thought he Cuase of Death shows up uder Death, maybe the fact tag is not CAUS?

    PGV privacy works a record (level 0) and fact (level 1).

    CAUS is an attribute (level 2).

    You can't apply privacy to attributes

    Adding this query to your other recent one, can I suggest you are making your life exceedingly complicated.

    It appears this is because you are trying to show some, but not all, details of living people to non-registered public viewers to your site.

    Why not go back to first-principles and think carefully about what you are trying to achieve. There may be a much simpler way than trying to plug holes as you find them (year-only dates, no notes, death, but not its cause, etc etc.

    Share your over-all aim with us. We might be able to suggest alternative solutions.

    To the Public, I basically want to show:  Birth & Death YEAR only (not day and month) for Living or Dead, NO Notes for anyone, NO Medical info for anyone, and NO Cause of Death for anyone.

    To authenticated users and admin:   show everything.

    Where can I find detailed info on Record, Fact and Attributes (level 0,1,2)?

    Thats OK, but what is the purpose of showing ANY details on living people to the public? Whatever you show risks their privacy.

    > Where can I find detailed info on Record, Fact and Attributes (level 0,1,2)?

    You need to read the GEDCOM specification (ver 5.5.1). itself, or PGVs WIKI pages have a good explanation of it (search for it on the WIKI page)

    What about SOUR records?. For me they are an important element I never want to show to public.

    Are you showing MEDIA items?

    One other solution I have heard people use in cases like this is two separate GEDCOMs - one with public info, and one (not accessible to the public at all) with all these things removed.

    AS PGV currently exists you might need to make some physical changes to your data as well. NOTES for example can exist at many levels in the structure, but as fisharebest said, they will only be hidden by privacy settings when they are at level 1.

    PGV, like most products, bases its fundamental privacy settings around whether a person is dead or not. Anything you try and do that ignores that will be difficult.

    Ok, so let me ask one last question regarding what I want to do.
    I have set the General Privacy setting to ONLY show Dead people, but I DONT want to show Medical info for these dead people.  I have selected to only show _MEDC facts and and fact details to authenticated users, yet it MEDICAL info shows to the public.  Why is that?

    Sorry, the Public cant see the medical info, but neither can the authenticated user.

    For reasons explained earlier, PGV cannot do this.  To illustrate, here is the death record for my g-g-grandfather

    <code>
    0 @I4113@ INDI<br/>
    1 NAME Robert /HOPKINS/<br/>
    1 DEAT<br/>
    2 DATE 07 JUN 1908<br/>
    2 AGE 82y<br/>
    2 PLAC Dartford, Kent, England<br/>
    2 CAUS Falling between the platform and the train at Greenhithe station
    </code>

    PGV can apply privacy at level 0 (the INDIvidual record), level 1 (the DEATh fact), but not at the level 2 (the DATE/PLACe/CAUSe attributes).

    If you want this, you'll need to make some code changes.  Hard-coding something to restrict the display of these attributes to authenticated users shouldn't be too hard.

    Alternatively, I'm guessing that you only use PGV to display data, rather than edit it (you use FTM as your "main" system?), so why not use a text editor to simply remove these lines.

    There is no 'official' tag for Medical events, so different software has different tags. I believe FTM uses '_MDCL' rather than _MEDC

    (You can check what tag you have imported by going to Edit Options - View Raw GEDCOM, or Edit raw GEDCOM for any person who has that tag)

    Try blocking _MDCL.
