Sorry if I missed this in the manuals, but is is possible to show NOTHING to users until they log in?  I see the options for living/non-living, but am not sure about no access at all.

Also, where would I change the startup mode - i.e. it currently starts in pedigree view - I'd rather it start in the Individuals list.

    Thanks in advance.

      Hi Tom,

phpGedView doesn't provide a way to limit all public access.  It is simpler to do this at the webserver level by protecting the phpGedView directory so that only people you give the password to can use it.  Your host should provide a way for you to protect certain directories in your site.

phpGedView also doesn't provide a way to switch where you start (though this would be a possibility in the future).  But to do this, just make your link to phpGedView/indilist.php instead of to phpGedView/ or phpGedView/index.php.

If I were you, this is what I would do.  I would protect my phpGedView directory so that only users with the password can get in.  Then I would create my own home page (or modify your current one) to describe what someone needs to do to get the password from you and then give them a link on that page to the Individual List where you want them to start.

Thanks John.  I think what you all have done here is really great.

      A few other comments/questions:

-I can't seem to hide living individuals from non-logged-in users. It always shows everybody/everything, despite my setting the value of $SHOW_LIVING_NAMES = $PRIV_USER;    in the privacy.php module and also trying both true/false for $HIDE_LIVE_PEOPLE in config.php

-assuming I can hide live people, I will probably not protect the directory with phpgedview, since that will mean a double-login, once for the directory and once for the gedview user.  I guess I could do one or the other, we'll see.

-I found the 'search' bug, and tried using the replacement script on the bugs page.  It removes the problem, but now searching by last name always returns no results. The generic search works though. I must have missed something?

I guess that's it for now - I'd be interested to hear any thoughts you have on the above and thanks again for your efforts.

me again - the privacy thing seems to work on my web host machine (apache) but not on my local machine (IIS).  I'll try again tomorrow and if I can figure it out, will let you know.

But the search bug still exists - the replacement script gives no results for a lastname search, but plenty of results for the generic search box (same search as last name).

I also noticed there seems to be no easy way to go from an individual's page to his/her family page if there is one.  Is it there and I don't see it?

The search page has been redesigned in the next release so I do not have a fix for the current version.

You can go to a family page, by clicking on the "Family with Parents" or "Family with Spouse" labels on the "Close Relatives" tab.
