Hello, please forgive the newbie questions here.

My family has asked me to put their family tree maker information on a web site.  I've never done anything like this before, is it possible or should I start running now!?

What is a GEDCOM file?  If this program will parse one and put it on the web, is it possible to convert a family tree maker data file into a gedcom file?

    Thanks for any input,

    Justice

      Hi Justice,

A GEDCOM file is a standard way of encoding genealogical data.  The gedcom format was created by the LDS church so that there would be a standard all programs could use to import and export data.  It is a fairly old standard and ubiquitous in the genealogy world.  I would be very surprised to find a genealogy program that couldn't understand gedcom.

I do know that family tree maker can import and export gedcom files.  But I've never used family tree maker before so I don't know the exact steps you need to take.  I imagine that it would be something like File->Export->Gedcom.  Look in the help files of family tree maker under gedcom if you have a hard time finding it.

      Any other questions?

      Hi,
Exporting from FTM is easy.  Just Select file export and save as a 5.5 Gedcom file for FTW

select the file name for the file and a GEDCOM file will be created.  You may want to run it through GEDFIX for FTW at http://www.taubman.org.uk/gedcom
before uploading it as this fixes a few problems with the GEDCOM "standard" that FTW uses.
None of the problems are critical and phpgedview will work with out them being fixed type just cause a few problems with the Locations as FTW can put alsorts of data in the location field.
