I have some people that were born/died in a place that no longer exists (in Poland). Found a interesting blurb on the Internet when I was searching for the name.

Any suggestions for including this blurb? Guess something akin to a Glossary and certainly not for every location! No good as part of SOUR as then it's attached only to one person.

I do have pages external to PGV (index) if that's necessary.

Thats a common request, that unfortunately has no easy solution. The PLAC tag has no allowance for notes or anything similar to be linked to it.

There has been a lot of discussion on these pages (mainly Open Discussion area) about it in the past. Most popular solution is to create PLAC as a "level 0" tag (like shared notes), but thats outside the GEDCOM spec. There is a lot of thought going into a solution though, and I suspect we will see something useful this year.

For now, I do actually think a SOUR is the best idea. You are wrong to say that's only attached to one person. You can attach the same source to as many people or events as you want. So create a SOUR that includes the 'blurb' and link every birth or death that occurred there to it.

On my own site I do have an alternative solution, but its a complex 'hack' that I can't recommend unless you are confident with PHP. You can see it in action at http://www.our-families.info/individual.php?pid=I2201  (see the camera icon after a couple of the places). It opens an image, but that could easily either include a note, or be a pdf document.

    and read how at http://www.our-families.info/module.php?mod=OF_tech&page=Place%20Images

Silly me :) I guess because I use SOURs specific to a fact/event, I forgot about using it for multiple uses by including the details in the SOUR itself.

That'll definitely do for now. At the point I'm at, won't have too many, just didn't want to lose the info. Alternatives to come sound interesting.

In rural Norway the "Place" information can change over time, be it spelling, or jurisdictions.  I've also got several people in Poland, Germany, Hungary  and other Eastern European countries that have historical information about the place and jurisdiction changes that would at some point be real nice to keep along with the place itself.  Because I also track farm information I would like someday to have information about the farms associated with the place tag.  In the US of course we have places that were once part of one state or territory but are now part of their own state, so it's useful in many places.

**I'm not asking for a change now,** just putting my two-cents (maybe only one-cent) into the mix.

Thanks for keeping this enhancement on a warm burner!!

Exactly. I'd like to know that CIty was once Citie and earlier Cite without cumbersome tracking in PLAC which I am doing now. (I do one level now City  depending upon date of event if known.

But like you, I want to track information about a place when I discover such in my research. Will make a nice compliment whatever comes out.

So much to track, so much to-do <SMILE>.

I've been working on a better way of handling place information.  I've got lots of ideas, rough drafts of data models, and a selection of test data.

I've separated a place from its hierarchy, and added dates to parent places.  Thus places that move from one county/state/country to another are handled automatically.  e.g. If I updated the date of an event in Prague from 1985 to 1995, the hierarchy would automatically change from Czechoslovakia to Czech Republic.

I've also separated place names from the places themselves.  Places that have names in different languages (or scripts) are handled automatically, so a french user gets "Etats Unis" instead of "United States", russians get "Москва" instead of "Moscow", etc.

Flags, links, notes, etc. are easily added to any place.

I'm still working on a system for sharing/collaboration.  Entering all this data is somewhat tedious, and there is little point in everyone repeating each others work.

This is still in very early stages of development, so don't bug me about it too much.  As soon as there is something to show, I'll show it.

Maybe towards the end of the year.  Depends how much time I get.
