So sorry for the most basic of questions here, but I have been maintaining someone's 4.2.3 site in php 5.6 for years. Will current version available here (dated 2017-11-06) work on modern php?

You need to use the latest-and-greatest that you can download from the SVN repository. This version works with all versions of PHP from 5.3 through 8.0 . The jury is still out on 8.1, but as far as I know, there have been no reports of problems with 8.1. Any problems with 8.1 can be corrected easily.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!
