Bear with me, this is my first php-mysql. I would like to use the MySQL setting instead of index files.
I created the db first from my hosting control panel (Manage MySQL):
username_ancestry
username_username
password
Privileges is set to All
localhost (already exists)
Then I applied the above settings in the editconfig.php in PHPGedView (turning off Allow Visitors to edit and Allow visitors to register), (already installed on the server, permissions set to 755 then 777), hit Submit and get the "Database configuration is bad" error regardless of permissions. It requests my password but won't accept it and I can't move beyond this.
Server is running
PHP Version 4.3.3
Mysql Version 4.0.18-standard
Would love to know what I'm doing wrong.
Thanks!

I had this same trouble. New territory, same error. It finally resolved that I had typed in something wrong. I had beginner's luck the first time. But the second time I got careless, I suppose. Here's how it worked for me at Aletia/JaguarPC control panel.
-Clicked Add/Remove MySQL Databases link
-Entered phpGedView in InputBox under Create MySQL database form, then clicked Create MySQL database.
-My host added the prefix username_ to phpGedView, so my database name was username_phpGedView
-I created a dbuser and password. User phpGedView.
-My host chopped the dbuser to phpGedV and added username_, so that the user was username_phpGedV
-In the "Grant permissions on a MySQL database to a MySQL user" box, I gave username_phpGedV full permissions for the username_phpGedView database.
It sounds like everything you are doing is correct, and dare I suggest you may just need to check your typing and capitalization again? I know it is frustrating. Keep us posted. If it is a high-tech problem, John will get you through.

What version of PhpGedView are you using?
You can start the configuration over by replacing the config.php file.
