I just received information about a cousin's death. All I had on the tree was his name and occupation, nothing else. From the obituary, I put in the date of death. I also added his wife and children. None of them have any date information. If I go to search and put in his last name, I get the general search results. Under the columns, Name Birth Place Death Age Place , it shows his name, then says estimated 1950 for his birth, then September 6 2010 for death. I can't figure out how it came up with estimated 1950, considering he was probably born around 1920-30 range. Any ideas where to look. I am using PGV 4.2.2.
Thanks,

Several logic bugs in 4.2.2 on these calcs and of course you can turn off EST (I do). 4.2.3 was much improved, but still only an educated guess especially when you have so little.
At one time they were based on the sum of information available, and usually based on parent's ages or if a marriage, calculated as well. If there is little information upon which to calculate a date, the estimate is most likely way off, as in this case.
But why don't you have a DOB? Or at least a good estimate. Most likely he's in the 1930 census, based on your information. Ancestry probably has a DOB in their phone/address listings. And the whitepages has an approximate age. And Intelius.com's age's are usually pretty accurate. Given the age of the children, you could probably get their DOB's from the Ancestry address records too. -Stephen

I think I would rather just turn it off (EST). I searched all through the GEDCOM configuration file and don't see any option to turn this off. I probably was looking right at it and don't see it, but could you point me in the right direction. As to the why, alot of times I get info from someone in the family with just a name, so I put it in and say one day I will research it. As he is a more distant cousin, never got to it until getting the info today. I will start trying to fill in the blanks, just was curious how it deduced he was around 60 years old when it had no date info other then a death date.
thanks,

In v4.2.3
ADMIN-GEDCOMS > EDIT CONFIG > DISPLAY & LAYOUT > HIDE & SHOW > Show estimated dates for birth and death > Y/N
This option controls whether or not to show estimated dates for birth and death instead of leaving blanks on individual lists and charts for individuals whose dates are not known.
