I am new to PGV and love it! I am used to using local stand-alone family history programs to do my research and editing, then upload the GED to a website. My initial upload to PGV worked fine and I have built my media folder and GoogleMaps. When I download my GED to my local disk (ALWAYS keeping the same filename as the WIKI dictates), add new information, export the GED and upload it to PGV I have problems. My two desktop progs are RootsMagic 4 which seems to renumber the INDI values, and Family Historian 4, which renames my media tags. What progs do other PGV advocates use that do this task smoothly? I have seen FTM mentioned in this WIKI. It seems that GEDCOM is not really a standard but just a guideline that some claim to follow … then bend.

If you're using an offline program to do the editing, then you don't need to download the gedcom back from PGV. Just continue to do your editing using your favorite program, save (or export) a new gedcom (with the same name each time), upload it and reimport it.
I'd avoid any program that insists on renaming INDI values, as it'll cause far too much confusion when the search engines come calling or when you want to send a link to someone, or set up "favorites".
I use GEDitCOM on the Mac for editing … it's seen me through fine for several years, and i can use it when I'm not connected to Internet on the laptop etc.
But you'll no doubt also be advised that you might as well use PGV to do all your editing online … just saving out a GEDCOM every so often for backup purposes.
GEDCOM 5.5 is a standard. But some programs might implement it in different ways, and there are ambiguities in it.

Obliged by Mark to take up the banner - Yes, given PGV's speed and ease, we now use it exclusively - except when we need an offline presentation. Then, as Mark, we use GEDitCOM on our Mas OS laptop with a downloaded GEDCOM from PGV,

one caveat-if data is edited by more than one person or more thn one computer, then you don't want to edit offline without exporting the current DB into your editor

I also use the on-line version of PGV as my master. My backup and unconnected usage is also PGV with XAMPP. Really has to be that way if you have multiple users updating.
While I've had a tinker with using other apps, I have no use for frills like templates for US Census data (I have about 1 person from there in my tree) or printing wall size posters. The usual deal-breaker for me is poor support for UTF-8 in the GEDCOM data.

Even after my short time running with PGV I take notice of the wisdom of Others! I too find myself using my online PGV as the definitive copy of my research. I have a backup on my home LAMP server running Ubuntu and now only use my standalone apps for (ahem) PLAYING. I am impressed with PGV only to have become a little frightened lately when I read the forum regarding its future and some short-sighted childish imaginings of the US thought police. Please give a newbie from England some hope for the future!
THANK YOU ALL - you have answered my kind of rhetorical question about offline GED editors.

I use Legacy 7.4 without any issues.
