Gee, this was a tough one. I believed this would be as easy as the read-me said, but nope...

I'm running MacOS 9.2 and MSIE 5.1 for the setups (I can move to my iBook with MacOSX10.2 and IE5.22 or Safari 1.0 if you think that helps). I have a UNIX-server with working php (other databases works), but I'm afraid I can't give you any  versionnumbers, cause I don't know how to retrieve them, and my ususal tech-support guy conveniently stays off-line today, knowing I'm doing this *grin*.

Anyway, at first I think it was my GEDCOM-file that was wrong, but I've changed the character settings as well as the linefeeds, and I've tried uploading it as text or rawformat via my ftp. Now I can see the data from the file in my MyPHPadmin-view, and the data seems fine. But I still don't get any output in any of the index-pages.

I've carefully read as much as I could, and the only thing I have noticed is that I don't have any file called authenticate.php, just a authentication.php. I've downloaded the package 3 times, and even grabbed the older versions to see if they have it, but nops....
The read me says "---> authenticate.php            # default users array database", so maybe this isn't needed in the MySQL-version...

Whatelse might be wrong? I don't even know where to start, and I haven't seen any questions about this in this forum. I've tried changing the default individual as well, but nothing helps. I still get 0 individuals, even if there are 1335 in the table pgv_dividuals...

I'm sorry if I mess upp terminology... I'm not a programmer, just a mere designer who tries to do a little fiddling from time to time... And I started using php 2 weeks ago or something... One of these days it WILL be easy even for us... *smile*

Macintosh GEDCOM files will need to be converted to dos or unix files.  The PHP regular expression matching functions do not recognize the mac \r end of line.  They only recognize the \n.  Windows/Dos files have the advantage of using both \r\n for line terminating so they do not have this problem.  I will add a note about this in the readme file.

You can get the versions of PHP and Apache by creating a phpinfo file.  Create a file named phpinfo.php and put the following three lines in it:
      <?php
      phpinfo();
      ?>
Then point your browser to it and you will see more than you ever wanted to know about your PHP configuration.

authenticate.php is for the standard version of phpGedView.  authenticate.php holds the user database and is not neccessary in the MySQL version because the users are stored in the MySQL database.

There are two things that I know of that can sometimes cause empty pedigree charts.  The first is setting the default individual to a non-existant person in the gedcom.  You've tried changing this, so that is not it.

The MySQL version is also a multi-gedcom system.  Sometimes the name of the "Default Gedcom" can cause problems.  It will usually work if the "Default Gedcom" field is left blank in the configuration file.  If the field is blank then it is supposed to find the first gedcom in the database and use it.  If it is not blank, then it tries to use the gedcom name in that field to get the data out of the database.  So if you imported the file, surname.ged, into the database, the default gedcom should be "surname.ged".  You should try setting the default gedcom field blank or to the name of the file you imported.

Thanks for your fast reply John!

I tried the import from Safari on my iBook earlier tonight, and somehow it started working. I don't know what did the trick, but I will keep the empty default in mind when I upload "the real thing". So far I've just ran an old test file.

GEDitCOM, the application I use, has a save function that explains the different linefeeds you talked about, so I used the non-Mac version for the test file. I also found you phpinfo-tip and have tried it. Thanks a bunch!

So far I've just had a couple of other problems.
For some reason I get Danish instead of Swedish first, but that's easy to change.

I will also check into posabilities to get the Swedish chars    in the indexes.

Then I think Safari had some problems when I click the tags on an individual, cause the content of the next tag is below the content of the first, with a lot of white and scrolling above. But it might be Safari handling DIVs badly...

This is fun!! Now I will have to build my own theme that suits me better - but I would never have even tried this script if it wasn't for the great designs in the demo and homepage! *major smile*

        Thanks for the help!

It tries to detect your Browser settings to see what language you want.  Maybe your browser is set to use Danish?

Using a UTF-8 encoded GEDCOM file should ensure that you get the    characters displayed correctly.

Safari seems to still have a few bugs in it.

When you get your theme done, if you would like to donate it back to be included with the project, then I would be happy to take it.

      Thanks,

The chars displays correctly in the data, but the surnames starting with  doesn't have their own indexpages... My hrstrm seems to "hang in the air", don't know where he's indexed...

Of course I will donate my theme if and when I have it done!!

And yes, Safari is a version 1.0, and we all know what that means. But it's a killer browser as far as I've seen, and the new versions come quickly, so I'm not worried. The bug-report-function is implemented in the browser as , so I can easily report the troubles with the layers to them.

      Thanks again!!

Do you mean that they don't have their own letter on the Individual List?

I am addressing this in the next version.  The individual and family lists were in major need of an overhaul and I believe they will operate much better and faster in the next version.

I've also been impressed with Safari.  It is a fast browser and works very well.  I also understand the difficulty in rendering DHTML and CSS.  I was impressed with how well Safari actually does at rendering complex HTML, especially for a first release of the browser.  I have no doubt it will get better as it matures.

Yes, I mean that you can only choose A-Z, then I have "?" "," "+" and " ' " too for some reason.
The "+" and "," has -people indexed.
The "?" has people I've set ? as surnames, so that's OK.
The " ' " there are three people with double surnames starting where Andersson is the first of the two. The character is also placed between A and B in the index-line, so it seems to think this is a special kind of A... :-/

I've worked with designs now for two days, ans today I took a break to upload the real thing of granddad, but the same problem as I frist started writing about occured again! I can still import my testfile, that shows up immediately, but when I try the new file, deleting the testfil, it imports, the data is viewable from phpmyadmin, but the output pages shows me nothing. I have tried changing the defualt individual, removing the default gedcom-file in the admin just as you suggested, and have uploaded and transformed the gedcomfile 20 times with different settings, but it just won't work.... Since the testfile works it must be something with the uploadformat in my new gedcom.file. But it's still strange that it gets imported into the tables, but doesn't show in the site... I want my new file *sob*.

      Any suggestions?
(you can mail me if you want an URL to check, but since I have living relatives in the testfile I don't want to make it public here)

      /Siss
