I'm having problems with RESN (Restriction) setting. I invoked it on a couple of OCCU entries. Don't seem to see the option again to repeat this option on other tags entries. When I viewed the raw Gedcom, it showed
1 OCCU Employee
2 RESN Confidential
I also want to use the RESN on SOUR and/or Citations but don't see that option when either creating the SOUR or attaching to a Citation. I did add it in the list of codes in the Edit Gedcom (Admin Area) but, while it does appear in the drop down, the setting isn't recognized. I viewed the raw Gedcom:
1 @SOUR 2@
1 RESN Confidential
1 AUTH The Newspaper
Signed in as general (access-only) user to test. The OCCU on the record was hidden but not the source details.
(PS: Found the probem with my previous noted 0004219[[2 SOUR @s2@]] missing 0 @s2 error: CASE SENSITIVE! Who knew!!!! the "s" should have been forced to "S"

In the GEDCOM 5.5.1 spec, which PGV follows for the most part, RESN can be a level 1 subrecord of FAM or INDI
or a +1 subrecord of an event. So that rules out SOURs, REPOs, and SOUR citations.
The data after RESN determines what happens--see page 60 of the spec, http://www.phpgedview.net/ged551-5.pdf
(But I see you are already using "Confidential"
Might want to search PGVWiki for "RESN" Sometimes PGV deviates from the spec in order to accommodate some other non-compliant software.

I looked at the RESN spec on page 60 and didn't quite understand. When I viewed other PGV sites (following link under Admin), I saw Sources as "Private" and assumed they used the RESN tag to block out information.
If I understand you, I cannot post the information for Admin only. It's either "all or nothing"?
Example: <http://www.glogowski.ca/repolist.php> This site has Repository but it's displaying Private for each REPO, when you display the list. Click any of the R numbers and you're returned to the welcome page.
Is there a way of doing similar for SOUR? I do not want to list the names or content of whom the emails are from, just that my information is from an email and the date.

Go to Manage GEDCOMS and edit Privacy. Click on 'edit' alongside Privacy file.
Open the section on Global Fact privacy settings. There you can set privacy at various access levels for pretty well any FACT, including AUTH, SOUR and so on.
Don't know what gedcheck will make of it - but as you already found, like most software, PGV has some flexibility beyond the GEDCOM spec. You just have to live with ignoring it in gedcheck - or as I normally do, only run gedcheck in 'critical' mode.

Just a word on this forum first. Please don't go resurrecting an older thread and hijack it with a change in content as this does little to nothing for future users' questions or ability to look up an answer.
That said: Privacy restrictions within PGV are not written to the GEDCOM, but rather retained within a separate privacy file. However, the standard does call for a +n recognition of the RESN tag on INDI's and FAM's and you could either add this to the entire individual or family unit via the PGV gui (if the RESN tag is enabled) or via a direct RAW EDIT.
from the proposed 5.5.1 gedcom standard:
"RESTRICTION_NOTICE:= {Size=6:7}
The restriction notice is defined for Ancestral File usage. Ancestral File download GEDCOM files
may contain this data.
Where:
confidential = This data was marked as confidential by the user. In some systems data marked as confidential will be treated differently, for example, there might be an option that would stop confidential data from appearing on printed reports or would prevent that information from being exported.
locked = Some records in Ancestral File have been satisfactorily proven by evidence, but because of source conflicts or incorrect traditions, there are repeated attempts to change this record. By arrangement, the Ancestral File Custodian can lock a record so that it cannot be changed without an agreement from the person assigned as the steward of such a record. The assigned steward is either the submitter listed for the record or Family History Support when no submitter is listed.
privacy = Indicate that information concerning this record is not present due to rights of or an
approved request for privacy. For example, data from requested downloads of the Ancestral File may have individuals marked with ‘privacy’ if they are assumed living, that is they were born within the last 110 years and there isn’t a death date. In certain
cases family records may also be marked with the RESN tag of privacy if either individual acting in the role of HUSB or WIFE is assumed living."

Excuse me! Although it was an older thread, my question was in direct response to kiwi_pgv's answer and was concerning the topic which was about making certain records private.

I hardly wish to get in a spitting contest, and its apparent you are totally unappreciative of the detail answer provided despite my caution, but - as I see it - your question had little to do with the "RESN restriction" subject of this thread, but rather "INDI Privacy". I don't see how your question fell under title, but perhaps I'm wrong. I can say that I'll be less inclined to assist you with other issues with an attitude like this.

Lets just make it quite clear. I appreciate every and any assistance that I can get from you or any other user.
I just don't appreciate an answer being prefaced with a lecture. I want help…. not unsolicited advice on what may or may not be the etiquette on asking a question.
I will certainly from now on be very vary about asking for help.

I use RESN to hide content. Hopefully my process will be a help to both macalter and kiwihawk.
Set "Use GEDCOM (RESN) Privacy restriction" to "Yes" in the Edit GEDCOM privacy settings.
Then add RESN to "Individual Add Facts", "Family Add Facts", "Source Add Facts" and "Repository Add Facts" in "Edit Options" of your "GEDCOM Configuration". This will then add "Restriction " to the "Add new fact" for these items.
By selecting "Restriction " and setting it to "Confidential" will add "1 RESN confidential" to the items GEDCOM record and it will be hidden from public view. The admin user is the only one that can see it.
Hope this helps

Thanks, Denis. Thats exactly what I wanted and works a treat.
I now have 2 options. To hide the person completely via Admin panel, or to just hide the details but leave the name intact via the RESN option. Purrrfect.

Is there any quicker way to make a person become 'Private' rather than go thru Manage GEDCOMS and edit Privacy - PRIVACY SETTINGS BY ID?
For example in the raw GEDCOM file?
