    Marshall - 2008-06-11

As always, I wish to thank the people that make phpgedview. It is by far the best genealogy software I have ever used.  I wish to make a suggestion to make it better.  It may have been suggested, but perhaps no clear way has been implemented yet.  I have thought about it a bit and was wanting to offer the idea.  Unfortunately I know little of programming php or much of anything else, but I think the concept is do-able.
The Research Assistant does this to some degree but I'm not wild about the way it's managed after the data is entered.  It shows you the "ratid" and then when you view it, its just a long string of mess.  And editing what has been done to it has been problematic from what I remember.  I think for simplicity of those that are wanting to enter in data efficiently, you could have some sort of script for the *family view* to add them to a census.  Mind you, this won't add everyone and you don't want it to, so hold that thought.
You enter in the date & place, and maybe link a census image.  Once you have everything you want added in, you put checkmarks on the individuals that are present for that census.  That will eliminate those that weren't there when the census was taken.  Once you submit it, it will add the census tag to those "checked" with the info about the census.  It will appear pretty much like you have done it by hand and it is editable later on.  For these "1850 Census" farming families that had 12 children, it won't be quite the tedious job.  You might have to go back and put in detail for age one by one, but at least the person has a link to the census and its correct.  The age probably wouldn't be hard to add in either, but I'd rather it be simple than complicated.
I'm hoping this will provide an idea and be useful to everyone should it become implemented.  I can submit a feature request as well, but I was thinking the space is limited when you do that, and it wouldn't allow me to put all of this in.  I can submit one if you like, and put a link back to this post for clarification.

    Thanks,
    Marshall

thanks for the suggestion. You may wish to search PGV forums for other CENSUS discussions, as there have been many, with other requests for features. You may wish to add to the existing RFE's for this feature and review Nigel's recent comments too.

I had previously searched the PGV forums and found many different things relating to censuses, but not quite like this.  I just submitted an RFE with perhaps better detail.  I think most of the functionality is already built into PGV.  It might be a matter of modifying one script to make a huge difference in the way of entering in census data.

If anyone wants to open a dialog with me on this, I'm more than happy to oblige.  I may not be a programmer, but perhaps my contribution could be to help visualize a simple yet effective method for the software to be even better.

Thanks again for all the hard work you all do for this.  I show every researcher I meet how great this software is.  Its only after they use it do they find out how flexible and valuable it really is.

Marsdhall, I agree, and have added further comments to your Feature Request.

I wondered if anything came of this?  I do have families of 12 and putting the same facts in "by hand" is tedious and really a waste of time. Has it been done and I can't find it?

The GEDfact Assistant, including the CA_Assistant, is in the Branches code. IIRC, it was not ported into the main SVN and its unlikely that it will be at this time as the main developer has moved on to another project. It does work and is not buggy, so you may wish to try the code by installing that SVN-branch. I have the code on my site and you may wish to review an example of the formatted output by reviewing my record: http://www.myarnolds.com/family.php?famid=F202X660&ged=Arnold.ged

    Stephen,
Once installed in the modules folder, how is it activated? I have GEDfact Assistant already.

Just because you have the module listed doesn't mean the full thing was installed. I don't recall if Brian ported ALL the CA-Asst stuff into PGV-SVN. However, simply go to any INDI record, select CENS tag and begin your entry with date and place. Then, select SHARED NOTE near the bottom and select "Shared Note using Assistant".

You'll have to learn to play with it yourself although Nigel has written an excellent summary on the PGV wiki:

Stephen: My CENS edit window doesn't match the instructions so will just assume it's not fully installed. Thought it was and I forgot to use it. Will wait for the new project the developer moved to. That's all.

    Mac,
Just a quick one, as I am rather tied up with other stuff.
GedFact_assistant is comprised of two sub folders. _MEDIA and _CENS each with its own corresponding control file.
    MEDIA_ctrl.php and CENS_ctrl.php.
PGV 4.3.2 comes with the "MEDIA" bit in SVN.
To get the "CENS" bit, you will need to get the files from the SVN Branch, PHPGedview-ca.
Then follow the summary, as Stephen pointed out, on the wiki link that Nigel wrote.
