Arne,
I typed this message before to only receive a server is down message :( Lost the lot :S Well, here is it again but not in the same words I guess.
I checked your findings and can confirm them. When I use Avant Browser, a sort of skin that uses IE, the URL is also corrected. As you said in IE it doesn't show the pics.
Checking both URLs with the / and without it show that the pictures path resolves to the same location. The same goes for the logo.
Then I checked my own gedview that is online with both urls. In both cases IE showed the pics correctly. My guess is, it might be the webserver going astray here. Any chance you can check that?
I am running Apache 2.0.44 with PHP 2.3.3RC2.
Regards,
Roland

the latter at hoppalong doesn't have the peculiarity, apparently it only applies to http://phpgedview.1go.dk where phpGedView isn't placed in a separate folder.

I get a Forbidden error message. I wonder if there is a permissions problem with the images directory? It seems like there could also be a problem with the virtual host settings in the apache httpd.conf file.

Thanks for looking into this peculiarity. I tried to compare the permissions of the images directory to that of themes directory and found them to be the same.
My guess is, there is problem with getting external access to the images directory because of the name "images":
Many free hosts try to hinder people from using their servers as a "storage" facility for pictures and other stuff, which then is accessed from elsewhere on the internet - so the guys at 1go.dk probably has something in their httpd.conf file which prevents images directories to be accessed from external places - well, that's just a guess, but a fair guess I think.
As to the other problem with the virtual host settings in the apache httpd.conf file I'll try to contact the guys at 1go.dk.
BTW, this server also has the problem that the index folder needs the to be chmod'ed with 777 in order to be writable. When we last discussed that issue you asked me to check the name of the owner and the group which should be www or nobody, however at that time I couldn't tell because my FTP agent don't reveal that information.
Lately I installed FileZilla which does reveal the names of the owner and the group, and on 1go.dk the name of the owner and the group is the same as the userid.
Thanks again

Since I previously mentioned several flaws at 1go.dk, it's only fair, also to mention that 1go.dk now has upgraded their Apache, their PHP, their phpMyAdmin and several other applications, and in doing that they have solved several issues including the phpMyAdmin errormessages which isn't present in their new phpMyAdmin.
Today I also found that the before mentioned server related peculiarity has disappeared :-)

Hey Arne,
That is good to hear :) It is dafe to assume it was a server problem :) Now I just need to figure out mine :p I am hosting it on my personal PC and just when using the program across the net, I often get page cannot be displayed. This is very random and too often.
Did I understand that 1go.dk does free hosting?
If your gedview runs fine there, I am going to take a look there :)
Thnx,
Roland

Yes, 1go.dk offer free hosting, 5 MB, PHP, MySQL and CGI, no banners.
Alternatively they offer 25 MB, PHP, MySQL and CGI plus the right to use your own domain name for as little as 50 DKK (about US$9) per year.
But unfortunately it's only available for people living in Denmark, ;-(
1go.dk is run by a few young people for the fun of doing it, and financed out of their own pocket. They need to set a limit somewhere, and decided to only make their free service available to people living in Denmark.
As it is, I probably caused these guys a problem because I recommended phpGedView and 1go.dk in the Danish genealogy newsgroup, and in doing that I apparently created a surge of genealogy people moving to this site, causing the owners to talk about closing down all the free-sites. :-(
150mb free space, PhP, MySQL, no banners, no restricted size on files uploaded, no mess!
But unfortunately the server is incredible slow, the owner of the site claims that the slowness is caused by his cable supplier or the polish infrastructure. ;-(
Sorry, Roland.

When accessing http://phpgedview.1go.dk with IE 6, all the pictures except header.png is missing.
When the URL is corrected to http://phpgedview.1go.dk/ none of the pictures are missing.
When accessing http://phpgedview.1go.dk with Mozilla Firebird the URL is automatically corrected to http://phpgedview.1go.dk/ and none of the pictures are missing.

Hi Roland
1go.dk are using:
Linux 1go.dk 2.4.18-3 #1
Apache
PHP Version 4.3.4RC1
I have two different installs at this server:
http://phpgedview.1go.dk
and
http://hoppalong.1go.dk/phpgedview
the latter at hoppalong doesn't have the peculiarity, apparently it only applies to
http://phpgedview.1go.dk where phpGedView isn't placed in a separate folder.

I can verify the same thing as Roland. On your server the / makes a difference but on mine I can go to http://genealogy.finlayfamily.org or http://genealogy.finlayfamily.org/ and both give me the images.
It appears to only be a problem with the images folder because the header displays properly.
If I try to access the images directly on the URL like this:
http://phpgedview.1go.dk/images/calendar.gif
I get a Forbidden error message. I wonder if there is a permissions problem with the images directory? It seems like there could also be a problem with the virtual host settings in the apache httpd.conf file.

Arne,
Thanks for that link but the website must be in English and the one I want to host is in Dutch :(
I guess I will keep it on my own server for now.
Thanks anyway,
