My phphedview site has only a few visitors daily and few of us editing. Yesterday and this morning I was working on several photos that a user uploaded and they were to big. I would d/l files and optimize them and then upload. I noticed that phpgedview is very slow (the rest of the site was OK). On both days I received notification from my server monitoring service (montastic.com) that my site is down. After today's notification in the middle of my editing a message "your site is suspended" popped up. I called the support and they directed me to the legal department. A lady told me that phpgedview DB on my site caused the server to become slow and even crash it and the admin disabled my site. They will enable for me cpanel and ftp service to optimize DB. If I don't fix it in 15 days everything will be errased. I'm still in the state of shock.
What should I do, please advise?

Sounds like your host made a suggestion - which was probably correct.
Access the DB and check collation. Usually part of a 'speed' problem. Also, you may have a need to optimize your tables, as they also suggested. That is also a good idea. If neither of these DB factors are at issue, then you probably have a bigger problem.
FOR SURE backup your database NOW when they grant you access so you can move to another host, if necessary.

For Bluehost
"Once the CPanel is open click on mysql databases then click
on the phpMyAdmin."
Use SEARCH in these forums for numerous discussions on COLLATION and database performance. If it needs fixing, there is Greg's DB collation patch you can DL and use, and again, these forums contain step-by-step instructional enhancements to Greg's already excellent help.

Don't take it personally Mitar, Bluehost did this to us VERY recently too - and we moved! Had been with them for several years.
Unbeknown to the terms of the 'unlimited space and bandwidth' agreement they have set a limit on what each user can have.
They granted us that restricted access too. There were heaps of Bluehost's own generated log files but nothing that we could do brought us closer to their new limit (we have 6 sites and none are that big presently).
*So it may not be PGV specifically.*
Do exactly what Stephen suggested and back up files and db NOW.
Bluehost will grant a partial refund if you decide to change providers.
**All the best!**

Where did you move and are you happier now and why?
I just got off the phone with their Abuse department (sic!) and tried to get answer what specifically caused the slow performance of the server. Lady told me that the server admin in not there but he left note "DB having too many connections". I check phpgedview log daily and there is no more then a few visitors daily beside the search engines.

That is their standard line! Then they told us that we surpassed their 50,000 inode limit (file pointers) and that we were welcome to find another host.
We moved to Downtown Host or should I say they did all the moving, while we sat back and watched! You simply give them your login details as you are doing with Stephen.
We had really specific criteria that we needed for our sites and it was quite difficult to find them all in one provider.
SSH access
E-commerce capability
Spam filtering
Realistic space limits
High traffic limits
Real user reviews
PHP 5.2+ with PHP.ini mod
Unlimited sub domains
Good customer service
We run Drupal, B2Evolution, Bitweaver, PGV, Phorum, Phreebooks, Zen-cart, plus some custom programmes.
As for "are you happier and why?".
Yes for the most part. The sites are a lot faster.
Change is always a bit of a challenge - you know, like having a different look and feel to the CPanel and finding out where everything is hiding.
There is still one issue with ram memory limits on one of the Drupal sites (this could be a bad module) that seems new.
Their customer service so far has been good.
The actual domain name transfers took longer than we anticipated but that wasn't a DTH issue - it was a Bluehost and registry issue.
Really I don't think any host is going to be perfect, but some perhaps are aiming for that standard whereas others just don't care and maybe that is the difference.

I suggested that the best course of action was to run his own server, possibly colocated. That way, nobody can complain about server load or the amount of memory PGV is demanding.
We've run our own server for 5 years now, and have been colocated for the last 18 months. Since being colocated, the only time the server had to be rebooted was when the colocation service lost power and the backup power went out too (too long a main power outage).

All this you said about DH sound impresive. I checked them out. If I consider another shared server host I would probably go with DH. Thank you very much for your input.

Gerry, at the moment my budget is very tight and I'm affraid I can't afford colocation service/fee. But what do you think about idea to ask if anybody else from the community would like to join and share the cost. I can build a server and find a host in my area (Silicon valley). Or if somebody already have the servise I can join and share the cost.
Could you tell us more about your hardware, your host and expensise you have for the colocation service.

After Greg did all this changes I called the host and they open the site. I upgraded it to 4.2.2 and after Greg did additional tuning it now runs significantly faster. Big, big thanks go to Greg and the whole community for this great script and support.

Mitar, if you want some help with this, and are happy for me to have access to your site, I'd be happy to help.
Greg, I would be more then happy to give you access to my site.
