Yesterday I was wondering if there is a standard way of upgrading phpgedview?

The way I do it now is basically a clean install everytime a new version comes out. At the moment this is not a lot of work but more an annoyance.

How do you upgrade and/or is there an easier way?

If you don't have to worry about customized themes and user accounts, you can just copy the new files over the old ones and reimport your gedcom files.

There is not a way to keep the current settings? As I said, it is not all that much work to "reinstall" it but a smoother way might be a thing to think of for the future. Mainly because of the configuration settings for both gedview and the gedcom files.

      Just a thought.

      1) have an interface that allows you to upload the latest zip/tar.
      2) phpGedView exploads the zip to a temp dir
      3) phpGedView somehow sets the permisions to the files needed (even though its running as "nobody")
      4) reimports all gedcoms.
      5) copies all existing files to a backup dir.
      6) renames temp dir to existing dir name.

You are now running the latest version :)

      Nice to dream :)

The real problem is that you need to make sure your gedcom config files have the latest configuration settings.  I haven't found a way to update gedcom config files without starting over.

While we are dreaming, why not go the microsoft route and automatically download and apply the latest version. ;-)

      John,

When with the Auto Upgrade application be ready for testing.  I'd like to be the second on the Beta test.  Arne will probably be the first on list ;)

Do I have to give you my second born to get it?

      lol

Just poped up on my screen-
"PhpGedView has auto updated. The following changes were auto configured. It now automatically randomly selects a different language every few minutes (RFE 444325443). Entering the wrong password more than twice will crash php to prevent unauthorized usage (RFE 444577786). Having any ancestors without proper birth and death dates will pop up an endless stream of popup windows to remind u to work on your data and not worry about upgarading PhpGedView that now auto updates (RFE 44457790)"

How is that for a nightmare :)

      LOL @ John and L Rutker ;)

I prefer my left arm John, I need right to do other jobs ;)

An auto update Microsoft style might just be the way L. Rutker describes.

If we will do any auto updating please let us think about it before using it :)

What?!? You mean you don't want to be forced into things? ;)

Why don't I install some spyware while I'm at it so that I can track what people do on your sites? ;)

I hope everyone knows I'm just kidding and would never do that.

No wonder I can't figure it out.

Now about the auto update, can we have it by Thanksgiving?

All joking aside people. This morning I set to it and wrote an upgrade script. I placed it in the patches section where it can be found at:
      http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=828788&group_id=55456&atid=477081

Please read the instructions before use.

      Have fun.
