Hello,
I'm getting errors when I try to upload the full package - PhpGedView-all-4.2.3
It says "failed to convert command to 8 bit charset "
in my ftp application FileZilla. This is for greek looking file names. Do I need to worry about this? The files are not being uploaded. Is there another way to upload them?
Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce - what files are they? Can't tell you if they are important or not without names.
But, any problem uploading files should be a sign that something is wrong, either with your server configuration, or your FTP software. There have been too many successful uploads of all the PGV files (more than 1000 just for the latest version), to think it could be a file problem. Adding this to your other issues might suggest that your server perhaps doesn't have enough capacity, time-out settings are wrong, or any one of a load of simialr issues. What is the full spec of your server installation?

I'm not sure how to answer the question, exactly, regarding the full specs on the server installation? What information would be helpful? No, it was just some files that are in greek that seem to be problematic.
Ok, I am looking at files with names like this:
ISR_δ╢∙╓εδ¼.txt
It is in the folder
places/ISR/
That is what I see on my computer, after unzipping the install. Is that a bad download? I see the same files in a prior download that I did months ago - that is to say it is in the uncompressed zip file of the download.
Anyway, I'm trying this on another server to see if I have the same problems.
Maybe I'm just not getting something as I say in my other posting.
Yes, I have heard good things about phpgedview, and thought it might be used even more than 1000 times. So, I'm sure the software is fine, or I wouldn't even be here.
Thanks,
Bruce

Yes, files in the places folder can be ignored. These ones are Hebrew language files for Israeli places. Unless you both use Israeli places in your tree, AND have Hebrew speaking visitors to your site you won't need them. The titles as you see them are quite correct as well.
I'm still suspicious of what your FTP software is doing to not upload these, but at least it doesn't matter.

Just for future reference, there are many settings in an FTP program like FileZilla for getting a successful file transfer to work. Your web host should point these out in a FAQ on their site. Otherwise it is mostly trial and error, switching from active vs. passive, ASCII vs. Binary, etc.
Fortunately for me, I have had my best results by FTP'ing the whole Zip file up to the server (and into the folder I want the install to be) and the using the un-Zip tool in my control panel. Then I can go back in to adjust permisions, for example. Unfortunately for some, their web host may be somewhat restrictive on such file types or not allow this methodology at all. Just a suggestion, your mileage may vary.

Yes, thank you. I can ftp and then go into my file manager to set permissions, uncompress a zip file. Wow. thanks. Ok, great though, I don't need the Hebrew files. It will be quicker to upload a zip file.
Thanks,
bruce
