No thumbs with Multimedia????

Help

    Hi all,

My picturefiles need to be shared between two web-applications, PGV and a Photobook. Therefore, within the PGV directory there is a directory Photobook, with a dir Photobook\pics where the jpg-files are. Other jpg files are in the media\pictures directory from PGV.
To make this work, I set the mm-path in PGV to .\ and the number of MM-levels to 2.
The only problem is, that there are no thumbs appearing in the persons-boxes of, for instance, index.php. They are creating in a directory "thumbs", under the two directories with the jpg's.
Am I doing something wrong? Any ideas to get this on screen?
    Thnx
    Boudewijn.

      Hi Boudewijn,

Could you please elaborate what config you are using ?
Are you using the "image module" for example ?

If not, did you generate the thumbnails yourself in the thumbs dir ?

      Max

        Hi Max,

i use the last PGV-version with MySQL.
I generated the thumbnails myself (first time, about 800). They have the same name as the original pics and are placed in the "thumbs" directory.

          Okki....
If ./ is your starting level, did you place the "thumbs" dir there ?

          structure you should have:
          ./
          ./media
          ./Photobook
          ./Photobook/pics
          ./thumbs
          ./thumbs/media
          ./thumbs/Photobook
          ./thumbs/Photobook/pics

          (if I'm not very mistaken....)

          Max

To tell about my experience with the mm-pictures and their thumbs:

I use the second level for this pictures. This means I use the following dir structure:

/media/family1/ here are all pics of familiy 1
/media/family2/ here are all pics of familiy 2

The thumb I created manually are placed in the following dirs:

/media/thumbs/family1/ here are all thumbs of familiy 1
/media/thumbs/family2/ here are all thumbs of familiy 2

The filenames of the thumbs are the same as the original pics are.

            I use:
            $MEDIA_DIRECTORY = "./media/";
            $MEDIA_DIRECTORY_LEVELS = "1";

I normally use PAF for editing the the genealogic data:

The gedcom record for an object of an indi looks like:

            1 OBJE
            2 FORM jpg
            2 FILE H:\PGV\media\Family1\image0001.jpg
2 TITL Title of family 1 pic 1
2 NOTE Note of family 1 pic 1
            2 _SCBK Y
            2 _PRIM N
            2 _TYPE PHOTO
            2 _SSHOW Y

Another Indi has following objec record:
            1 OBJE
            2 FORM jpg
            2 FILE H:\PGV\media\Family2\image0001.jpg
2 TITL Title of family 2 pic 1
2 NOTE Note of family 2 pic 1
            2 _SCBK Y
            2 _PRIM N
            2 _TYPE PHOTO
            2 _SSHOW Y

Every dirname before the /media/ -dir is ignored by PGV.

If I didn't understand your problem wrong I would say you need to move the thumb dirs from the dir inside the imgae dir to the thumb dir which is under the media dir. (Hope you understand what I wanted to say :-)

            Not:
/media/family1/ here are all pics of familiy 1
/media/family1thumbs/ here are all thumbs of familiy 1

/media/family2/ here are all pics of familiy 2
/media/family2/ thumbs/ here are all thumbs of familiy 2

            But:
/media/family1/ here are all pics of familiy 1
/media/thumbs/family1/ here are all thumbs of familiy 1
/media/family2/ here are all pics of familiy 2
/media/thumbs/family2/ here are all thumbs of familiy 2

              Max, Kurt,

Thanks both for your extensive answers!
You both set me on the right track again.
Once you start thinking in a pattern it's hard to get out of it :-(
The mistake I made was, to think that the thumbs dir was a subdir of each pictures dir, but it is a subdir of the designated mm-directory!
Even the pictures of my sourcedocuments show up in the portal now!

              Thanks!
              Boudewijn

P.S. Kurt, Shall we add the explanation to the PGV-FAQ (yet to be started)?

                Hi Boudewijn...

This was the same think I tought as I started with pictures and thumbs ;-) So I knew what your problem was :-)

The german help text for the media depth is a little bit better than the english one :-(
Once Peter or I had translated this into english and added that to the english help file but as I see now it has been deisappeared from the english one
                :-( :-(

This means we should add that into the FAQ of PGV :-)

Someone I talked some mins before said:
The dokumentation seems to be bigger in the future than the scripts ;-)

As you made the suggestion, what about picking this or other items / answers and putting them into an faq for the users and the ones for the developers into another one.

John has to do with the general source and coordinating works, Roland works on the upgrade and index sorting and I have to work on the lang- and privacy edit :-)

Someone has to make the start ;-)

                bye, Kurt

      Hi Kurt,

I started a new thread for this topic in the developers forum.
If I have some time left this week I will look at the readme to see if your text fits in. I'm convinced that will make it more clear.

      Boudewijn

I have added a video AVI multimedia file to my tree.

It is not clear to me how its thumbnail should be created. A JPG file with the same name is not shown and neither is the AVI file

It works - Created a JPG file and renamed it to AVI
