I had asked this question a while back, but was told it was a bug in 4.2. I now have the lastest upadate, 4.2.4 and it seems to still be a bug unless I have something wrong. Here is what I have and what I believe should be the result (but is not)…
Brother in law - SAM
1st Marriage - LINDA
2 Children w/ LINDA - DAYNA & MAYA
Divorce from LINDA
Marriage to ROBIN
For ROBIN
ROBIN married to HAL
ROBIN had 2 children with HAL - BRANDON & JARED
ROBIN divorced HAL
ROBIN married SAM
ROBIN & HAL family page shows 2 children - BRANDON & JARED
Also shows marriage before 1984 and divorce after 1987
SAM & LINDA family page shows 2 children - MAYA & DAYNA
Also shows marriage 1985 and divorce 2004
SAM & ROBIN family page shows no children and marriage 2005
SAMS page shows on right sidebar immediate family of EX-WIFE LINDA, DAUGHTER DAYNA , DAUGHTER MAYA and then Immediate family WIFE ROBIN. No children listed under ROBIN (would expect stepson BRANDON and stepson JARED)
ROBINS page shows the same in reverse, ie, immediate family HUSBAND SAM (no children listed), then 2nd immediate family EX_HUSBAND HAL with sons BRANDON & JARED.
For the 4 children, each of their pages only show their biological parents and sibling, no mention of step mother or step siblings.
Is this still a bug or did I set something up wrong?
Thanks

I'm running V4.2.4 stable and my entries are showing what you want for the children. They are labelled "Half-Brother" and "Half-Sister" rather than step. But the step-children are not showing for either wife. You can see an example at my site here:
If you then click on his second wife Ann Aggett FEWINS, the two children of William's first wife are not showing. This does not particularly bother me, but for completeness, her step-children should be shown.
Is it a bug or a feature request?

However, this bug does not usually prevent the display of step-parents unless there are no dates for marriages or where there are no children to that union. It is unlikely it will be fixed soon.
I'm of the opinion that genealogy is concerned with blood relationships. A step-child is not related to the person who is the step-parent. Adoption by the not-related parent of the step-children doesn't change the blood lines.

I found if I go to relationship tree and type in Robin for the first name and Dayna for the 2nd name, it comes up with the correct relationship, that is, Robin is the step-mother of Dayna. Same if I put Jared for the first and Dayna for the 2nd, it comes up with Jared being step-brother of Dayna. So if it can figure it out here, it should be able to do it with the individual page as well. Is the algorithm used to determine relationships different for the 2 scenarios?

It can, with changes in the code.
The relationships displayed on the INDI pages are quite complicated and adjusting the code to add this feature equally so.
There are few developers here to tackle the problem and they have their own set of priorities. Are you offering? -Stephen

There's a difference between calculating relationships at your request and showing unrelated people on the Personal Details page. Step-whatever aren't related in any way to the person in question.
My personal opinion is that PGV is working as designed - unrelated people aren't shown on the Personal Details page.
You could try playing with the ASSO relationships. You'd have to add "Step brother", "Step sister", "Step mother" and "Step father" to the relationship list. You'd add these to the list in lang.en.php, somewhere after line 1634, or (better) in your own extra.en.php file, and you'd make corresponding changes in edit_interface.php after line 61.
The change described above won't cause the Personal Details page of the step-whatever to be easily accessible the way that of a brother, sister, mother, father, etc. is. This functionality won't be implemented, unless you volunteer to do it. A BIG caution: If you decide to go ahead with this, be absolutely sure that there is a GEDCOM configuration option to turn this behaviour off.
I, for one, do NOT want to see step-whatevers on my Personal Details page. For example, my mother's second and third husbands are my step-fathers according to the "rules", but I don't consider them to be my "fathers" of any sort, and I'd be really annoyed to seen them on my Personal Details page. I despise husband #2, and hold #3 in high regard, but he's not my "father". I never lived in the same house as either #2 or #3, so that's another reason for them to NOT be my "fathers"

The short answer is YES, much of this is related to an existing bug - one that has been there for some time, and one not easily fixed.

Stephen,
If my knowledge of PHP was above the 'tinkering' level, I would, but since it is way above my head, I will just live with the way it is.
Thanks again,
