Hi Folks, I have been browsing around trying to find the answer to this problem, but with no luck. On the  http://genealogy.finlayfamily.org/ website, little thumbnail images are displayed in the pedigree view. However, I just can't seem to figure out how to do this on my site. I have read the manual and readme files and I have done what it says. The thumbnail and images are displayed on the "Notes, Sources, and Media" page, but not in the pedigree view. How does one go about switching these images on?

I also noticed that on the above mentioned site, that the first image is displayed in the top left hand corner of the page. How does one do that?

    Thanks
    Jannetta

      I had the same problem.

But i have found the problem or have to do it

You make a new folder "thumps" under media (And you sub lib if you have that) and place smaller imager off you orginal picture.
I even think the is a folder call that under there.

I was wondering if it can be the picture you already have in the main folder? Question to John i think :-D

      Hi Jan

I don't quite follow what you have said. Should the directory be "thumbs" or "thumps". I have a diretory thumbs and the thumbnail pictures do display in the "Notes, Sources, and Media" view, but not in the pedigree view. Just to try before bugging you again, I did create a thumps and copied an even smaller version of the graphics in there, but it made no difference to the pedigree.

Also, what did you mean by "And you sub lib if you have that"?

      Thanks
      Jannetta

The directory has to be thumbs, and you already have it!

You can use many different picture/photo manipulationprogrammes to make downscaled versions of your pictures. These downscaled pictures must be placed in phpGedViews media/thumbs directory.

You can eventually do some experiments in order to find a suitable size.

Please use the "Upload Media Files" from the administration menu.

These thumbs won't show on your charts until they have exactly the same name as the full scale picture (it doesn't represent a problem since they are placed in a different directory).

i find my suitable size is about 55x55 inch and my orginal i make around 200x200 or 300x300 or something like that

I only find the upload media, to be good when i have new picture i like to add.. Else i just upload them manually by ftp. When the is serval picture.

      Hello Jannetta,

I took a look at your challenge :) and came to the following conclusion:

Looking at the standard settings these should automatically show pictures connected to people.

      Here is what is required:
      1. The picture (multimedia object) should be mentioned in the person record. You can do this via add multimedia object on the notes/sources page. Then choose the picture that shows up in the multimedia list. You can add multimedia via the admin menu by choosing the upload multimedia. Choose the picture you want to upload, this can be same picture for normal size and thumbnail size.  This can also be done by copying the file to the images folder and another copy to the thumbs folder.

      2. Import the gedcom file again to reflect the changes. This can be done by choosing the link at the bottom of the page stating there are changes.

After importing it, you should be set and the pictures show up in both the individual page and the pedigree view.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

      Regards,

      Roland

Hi there, thank you for all the comments so far.

However, I have done all the things suggested, but the pictures are not showing up in the pedigree view. I use the netpbm suite and a shell script to resize the images, so I know all the names are exactly the same. I do all this directly on the fileserver, so I do not use the upload multimedia option to upload the pictures. They are, however, in the correct place, or else the pictures and thumbnails wouldn't have shown up at all in the other views.

You can have a look at the site at http://www.henning.org.za/phpGedView/.

The pictures and thumbnails are showing up in "Notes, Sources, and Media", but not in the pedigree view.

      Regards

I think i see the problem.

When i click on off the the person like I27.
I see no picture at the ubber right corner.
That most mean that you havent set 1 off the picture to be the default.
Thise meaning the picture so show.
So you have to use a Program and set 1 off the picture as default.

        I think that the problem!

      Hi again Jannetta

I visited your site, and it looks to me, as if your picture isn't linked to the persons ?

In my gedcom pictures are linked to the persons like this:

      ...
      1 NAME Arne/Eckmann/
      2 GIVN Arne
      2 SURN Eckmann
      1 SEX M
      1 OBJE
      2 FORM jpg
      2 FILE C:\pics\arne2003.jpg
      ...

and my pictures and thumbs does show up in the charts.

      Hi Arne

I just had a look at a GEDCOM entry for a person whom I know there is an image for. Here is the GEDCOM view for individual I12:

      0 @I12@ INDI
      1 NAME Leonetta /Henning/
      2 GIVN Leonetta
      2 SURN Henning

This looks right to me, or am I missing something? The person's picture shows up in places other than the pedigree view, so I would have thought that, that would imply that the images are linked?!?!

      Regards

      Hi Jan

If I understand you correctly, you are saying I haven't set one of the pictures to be the default. It sounds to me like you have nailed the problem here because I don't recall doing anything to set a picture to the default. They way I understood the manual, the first picture in the list would be used as the default. How should I set a picture as default?

      Regards
      Jannetta

      Jan is correct.

Setting the _PRIM tag to N means that this is not the primary photo of this person and do not show it on the charts.  This way if you only have a picture of a grave's headstone or something you can remove it from the charts.

You should be able to change this in your regular genealogy program.  If you can't you can change this in PhpGedView by clicking the edit link on the "Note, Sources, and Media" tab and changing the "N" of the _PRIM tag to a "Y"

Thank you very much Jan and John. Like my 5 year old daughter would say: "You've done it!"

Thank you so much everybody for all you help. Now for the big job. I didn't create my GEDCOM with a genealogy program but with scripts that I wrote myself to get the information into GEDCOM format from a database. So I'll probably be writing some more scripts.

      Kind Regards
      Jannetta

      Hi again Janetta

Yes, your gedcom file looks okay to me. Like Jan I also think that several pictures under the same person may give problems. But I'm not sure, and I have absolutely no idea as to how and where you can set one of the pictures as default. ;-(

Since you have written your own scripts, you can just modify them to write a "Y" after the _PRIM tags instead of an "N".  If they are all set to "Y" then the first one will be chosen.  If they are all set to "N" then none of them will be chosen.  If the _PRIM tag doesn't exist then the first one will be chosen.

      Hi John

Wow your last comment was just in time to save me from getting very creative and writing lots of code. I was just trying to figure out how I'm going to read each record and change the first occurence of _PRIM. However now I'll just search and replace in an editor!

Thanks, and thank you once again to all, for all your comments and help.

      Regards

It's all done! You can have a look at the pages again if you want to see the result of all your help! http://www.henning.org.za/phpGedView/.

Now the big job is to order the pictures, but that I'll do over time.

      Thanks to all
