    Step family should not be shown in any views. Half-sisters and half-brothers should only be shown with their natural parents.
    If a person is not married he/she should be named partner not husband/wife.

    Example 1
    Viewing Close relatives: for (I2) Villy Christen Henriksen
    http://www.familiesporet.dk/pgv/individual.php?pid=I2&ged=Correll_Dohlmann.ged&tab=0
    1. Mother's family with Hans Peter Jensen should not be shown in this view.
    2. The step-father is mother's husband and should not be named step-father.
    3. Better still: The step-family should not appear on the son's Close relatives' view.

    Example 2
    Viewing details for (I2) Villy Christen Henriksen:
    http://www.familiesporet.dk/pgv/individual.php?pid=I2&ged=Correll_Dohlmann.ged&changelanguage=yes&NEWLANGUAGE=english
    Step-Parent Family should not be shown in this view as it is connected with the mother of (I2).
    Note 1:
    I have received many complaints from relatives who are protesting against being shown together with step-parents who are not their "real" step-parents. In many cases the so-called step-parent is the ex-wife or ex-husband of one of the parents.
    Note 2:
    Have also got a complaint about an ex male partner who appears to be called step-father to two children whom he never knew existed. The children are in fact the children of his former partner and her new husband. To avoid this I suggest that the step-family be removed from all Close relatives view.
    Note 3:
    Half-sisters and -brothers should only be shown with their natural mother and natural father.

    Example 3
    (F238) Immediate family regarding (I3) Hildur Dohlmann:
    http://www.familiesporet.dk/pgv/individual.php?pid=I3&ged=Correll_Dohlmann.ged&tab=0
    The so-called "husband" under Immediate Family (F238) was never married to (I3).
    The word "Husband" should be changed to "Partner".
    Note: As you can see from the above example, there is no indication of a "Marriage" between the so-called "Husband" named Private (unknown) in Immediate Family (F238).

    Regards
    Jens

    You can change the "husband" and "wife" text to whatever you wish, but this change would then apply not only to married couples but also to other types of male/female relationships, including same-sex.

    You need to create a "languages/extra.xx.php" file for each language your site supports.  For example, the Danish file would be called "extra.da.php", the German one would be "extra.de.php", the English one "extra.en.php", etc.

    Using German as an example, the contents of the "extra.de.php" file would be the following 7 lines:
    <?php
    $pgv_lang = "Ex-Partner/Partnerin";
    $pgv_lang = "Ex-Partnerin";
    $pgv_lang = "Ex-Partner";
    $pgv_lang = "Partner";
    $pgv_lang = "Partnerin";
    ?>

    When you create such a file, be sure to create it as a plain text file.  If you need to show non-Ascii letters such as a-ring or o-slash, or one of the Umlaut letters, you will need to create the file as UTF-8, but without the Byte Order Mark (BOM).  If the file is accidentally stored as UTF-8 with BOM, you will see "output already started" error messages when you switch to a language where this erroneous file format occurs.

    Note that this does not change all places where the word "husband" or the word "wife" or even the word "spouse" occurs.  It's impossible and also very unrealistic to make that sort of change everywhere.

    Whether step-whatevers should be shown on the Close Relatives tab is a matter of opinion.  I happen to agree with you, but others do not.  It might be a good idea to provide an option (default "off") that controls whether step-whatevers are considered to be close relatives or not.

    I agree with you that it is a good idea to have an option to control display of step-whatevers.

    The only time it is nessarry to use the word "partner" is in the case of an illegitimate child where the parents wen't  married.

    My question is this.  I have asked about this before as my site is  NOT showing step relations, so I am wondering either what version you are using that it is showing on yours (I am using 4.2.4), and if the same, how are you entering things to show step relationships that I am not doing.  Here is the link to my prior post :

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/phpgedview/forums/forum/185166/topic/4324690?message=9342268

    Also, not the best solution, but I solved the non-married issue by changing the wording for spouses from husband and wife, to husband/partner and wife/partner.  I would also like to see a way to use partner for individual cases.

    Doc
    PGV does not show step-relations except in the child's INDI navigator panel, so
    A) you must be using the navigator, and
    B) you must be on a child's page, not the step-parent's page.

    Doc:
    Thank you.  Your solution to the "husband/wife" vs. "partner" issue raised by Jens is precisely what I was describing.

    PGV cannot distinguish between truly unmarried persons and those for whom the details of the marriage are unknown.

    Here's a link to the relevant GEDCOM 5.5 standard entry:
    http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pmcbride/gedcom/55gcch2.htm#FAMILY_EVENT_STRUCTURE

    The absence of a ENGA | MARR | MARB | MARC sub-record does not mean that the event never took place.  Furthermore, the standard does not permit 1 MARR N which one would expect to indicate "never married".  I believe that this is a deficiency in the standard.

    Another consideration:  The presence of a 1 ENGA or a 1 MARB sub-record does not positively indicate that the proposed marriage took place.

    I am not shure if it in the future will be possible to remove step-families from the tab "Personal Facts and Details" as suggested by canajun2eh, but it at least a wish from my side.
    Step-families should still be shown in the tab "Close Relatives".

    I just updated from 4.2.3 til 4.2.4 and things went wrong. I replaced config.php with the blank/new config.php from the download in "http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpgedview/".
    Is there a procedure for updating: what to do and what not to do?

    canajun2eh:
    Thank you for the hint of how and where to translate into danish.

    Please read some of the other Help topics.  The upgrade procedure was described most recently in the "media" topic.  This topic is a few lines below here.
