I seem to have takena month off after upgrading to 4.1.5 only to find that we're now on 4.2.? - Question - I have just settled my site down but have a multi media problem in that I get massive errors when I upload anything new.. should I try to resolve this before I go down the upgrade path or is this a problem that is fixed in a bug fix in the latest version?.. it's just that I see there are many help requests currently from people upgrading..
Ideas? - the basic error is ERROR 8: getimagesize() : Read error!
0 Error occurred on in function getimagesize

I have checked permissions, I can edit existing images nut not upload new ones - wel I can but I get these errors once it's been uploaded…

It sounds like you might be trying to upload excessively large images.
But to answer your question - yes I would recommend you upgrade. Only then will you know if that was a bug, and one that has been fixed in ver 4.1.6, 4.1.7, 4.2.0, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 0r 4.2.3!
Check the server requirements for upgrade very carefully first though, as these have changed significantly since 4.1.5. Use the WIKI, and look up "Upgrade".

Perhaps you have the wrong permissions set on the media folder? It needs full read/write (777) at all times on the folder, any sub folders and all files.

Yes I've done this all the way down and used the phpgedview set permissions option as well. and deleted the media and tried again. It doesn't happen if I odify existing media - so it shouldn't be permissions? - Help please…

Did you upgrade your PHP version at the same time - e.g. switching from PHP4 to PHP5?
Has there been any change to your webserver settings (the above change often includes this)?
Perhaps your files are owned by the webserver instead of your username (or vice versa)
Guess what? - I had run out of disk space! - OOOPPPPs! Sorry to have bothered everyone!
