Select which media type to attach PDF files?

What is the suggested file type when I attach a PDF document as a media file?

There has been a question in 2003 which media type is preferrable, JPG or PDF. I take it therefore that PDF files are intended and supported. I can attach a PDF file and it works but I am confused by the "DOC" icon.
Which type from the drop-down list should I select? I clicked on "Document" (admittedly a broad definition) but the media file then gets a DOC icon which I immediately associate with an M$ file type. I would expect that there is also a file type selection which comes with the widely known PDF file type icon (if Adobe does not resent that) or, second best, with a similar gif like for DOCs but with the letters "PDF".

Any suggestions? Are there plans to add such a file type to the selection list?

There is actually a media icon for PDF files. The media list should be choosing that icon.

    This is a bug.

Thanks for the reply! Then the "Document" selection is indeed meant for PDF files?

Actually, "Document" is a catch-all for all sorts of file types that aren't external links, pictures, video, or audio files. It's the default for unrecognized file types.

I plan to make the icons for PDF , TXT , and TEX file types show properly. They're already present, but aren't used. In addition, at least files with the HTM/HTML, DOC/DOCX, TEX, and PDF extensions shouldn't cause Lightbox to launch first because these file types need external programs to be properly processed.

You won't need to re-import your media files when the program is corrected. The decision as to what to show as the pseudo-thumbnail and what to use to process the file is based on the file name extension and is determined dynamically by the program.

As was mentioned, some file types are inappropriate for Lightbox, and Lightbox just passes them on to an external program local to your PC. You observe that with PDF files, where Lightbox produces an empty display and launches a download of that PDF file, for handling by your local PDF viewer.

    Fixed in SVN 7125.
