You have better control if you use the "Manage Servers" page that you can access from the Admin menu when you have logged in as Administrator. This has the advantage of PGV logging all denials, and you don't need to mess with the .htaccess file.
I have quite a long list of IP addresses and address ranges that I block from there.

I assume that I go to Admin, then to Site Administration/Manage Sites, then I enter the IP into 'Ban sites by IP,' and then click on the "+" (plus sign.) Very good - seems like I learn something new about the software every week or two (if I pay attention.)

Yes, that's it. You can also ban a range of addresses by substituting an asterisk for the number. The Help text explains it.
You should add something into the Comments field as a reminder. The Comments text is displayed in the PGV log when access is blocked by PGV.
When you have several entries in the Banned list, the list is sorted by the Comments field. This is useful when you're banning several related addresses such as the Amazon EC2 or the Yandex address ranges.

FYI, I got a number of attempts to 'logon' from a known hacker/spammer.
To block, add to your .htaccess:
Actually, that doesn't seem to be quite right, but the 'deny from 95.64.12.20' will block the Ukranian hacker (I think.)
