After I downloaded 4.2 I did some poking around the PGV site and sourceforge.net. Although it's been said in different ways at different times on the PGV forums, it is readily seen that there is a very small group of core developers, writers, bug fixers, and support people. I can't imagine the hours these people put into this project. To you I say Thank You! for your dedication and support to PGV.
An additional item I just have to mention. Like any other program, I've run into snags using PGV. The major difference between snags in PGV and most any other commercial program is that I have yet to become angry, disgusted, or tear my hair out with PGV. Fast, friendly and patient support and help is just a forum away. Better yet, that same help extends to actual usage of the program in real life, i.e. what are my options for recording military facts on an individual, etc., how do I configure my server and so on.
A salute to the PhpGedView development and support team! Thank You!
With gratitude and appreciation,
Lou

I'll add my thanks also. I've actually paid for "the other" web based genealogy program. Although there are some things I like about that app it doesn't compare, as a total package, to PGV.
I recently had an email complimenting my site:
"What a wonderful site that is! It is clear and well laid out I think it is one of the best family sites I have seen."
A large share of that praise, if not all of it, goes to the PGV developers.
Thanks!

There are _several_ other web-based programs, some free, some cheap, some neither.
I actually chose one of the low-cost ones--TNG--over PGV at first because (frankly) its user interface is simpler.
But after a while, I just couldn't bear not to have "relationship privacy." PGV beats TNG in several other ways, too, but none of them were deal-breakers for me. Still, TNG _is_ a decent program, and I'm afraid it's true that its look-and-feel is slightly better.
I've run across a few that have VERY nice user interfaces. But they all fall far short in features, or have serious privacy concerns, or both.

I third that! I only found PGV yesterday, after trying a Windows based genealogy program. But this online genealogy program is really something! I really appreciate all your hard work folks! Thank you very much!

I echo the appreciation expressed above for all the time and effort the developers have sacrificed to get to this new release. The product is so superior to the PGV I started with in May 2005 and the speed and interface improvements in v4.2 include many valuable enhancements to presentation and productivity.
Thanks, and thanks again. Maybe you'll get a free more donations as thanks once other admins install this terrific product.

I wouldn't mind donating but I don't use PayPal. Also there is no page saying where the money goes. The link on the donation page just redirects to the wiki. People often donate easier if they have a clear idea what the money is used for.
Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to actually have an easy to find donate link either :)
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
Just an FYI, but if you see a specific user with a dollar sign next to their name, then they are accepting individual donations. Simply click on their name, and you'll be brought to their profile page, with easy links to donate. From there, you should also see full descriptions of what their plans are for the money.
I, too, have great appreciation for the developers and the work they do. I am not a web developer by trade, and would be nowhere without PGV and its active support community. Thanks again.

First, ditto to all of the above comments and kudos to all the developers who have selflessly devoted their time and effort to this project. As to the donations, this will hopefully will help those who want to "put their money where their thanks is":-).
First, you do not need a PayPal account to make a donation. PayPal just handles the donation. You can use your credit card.
I agree it is not perfectly clear where to donate, so here is a very quick and easy (though maybe not the most intuitive) way. On the top menu bar where it says "Summary, Tracker, Forums, Download, More" go to the Forums tab dropdown, click on Search (NOT the search at the top right of the screen). When the search page comes up, click on the donate button on the upper right. You will be taken to the Supporters page and will see near the top a link that says "Donate to PhpGedView (phpgedview)". Click on the link and you will be taken to the donation page. Click on the PayPal link with the amount you want to donate. You will be taken to a page where you can put a comment if you want, then you will be taken to a page where you can put your credit card information.
Hopefully that helps. Now for my editorial two cents. Look at the commercial software out there, look at the features, the support, the response to bugs, the customization, etc, and then look at the cost. Then decide if what you have in your hands is worth at least $5 (the lowest donation amount listed). I you answered yes, then follow the above and show your support and you will have a program that will continue to grow and prosper for years to come!

As of late much has been done to accommodate my concerns. I wanted to make clear that i am very grateful for PGV. Being an almost all FOSS user (unless im at school or work computers) i am grateful for a program that will run on Linux and uses and open format for collaboration and disseminating information.
Thanks so very much.

I made a donation to a developer few months ago but it is not showing on the project donation page ( https://sourceforge.net/project/project_donations.php?group_id=55456 ) or my user name.
What should I do to have my donation showing? Should I donate to the project or a developer? I mean what would be better for PGV overall? When one gets that little cog by user name?
Thank yoy!

(2) a project - this gets you a small cog. Donations made to the project go to the project owner/founder - John Finlay (yalnifj).
(3) an individual developer - this doesn't get you any cogs.
There is no easy way donate to all the developers on the project. You have to choose someone who wrote a feature you liked, helped you set up a site, sort out a problem, etc. But this doesn't get you any public recognition. If you want a cog, then you need (1) or (2)

Yes John is still very much around. Not able to be as active as in the past, but still submitting code as recent as last week.

Donations can be made to either
sourceforge.net
individual projects
individual developers
FYI, donations made to the project go to John Finlay.
I'm not sure how he spends it, but if he's anything like me, he'll blow it on CPU, RAM and bandwidth ;-)

Btw, what should I do, donate to the project or a developer, I mean what is common practice here?
