This is merely curiosity and I don't want to bring it up over in Help!

When I upgraded, I didn't have two installations running concurrently, just upgraded.  Never mind the details; it seems to have gone flawlessly and everything looks like it works.

What I'm curious about in reading the numerous posts is this - the SQL has changed in 4.2 and all I did was upgrade.  Did the upgrade make the changes 4.2 wants to see in the SQL side?  Assuming it did, is/are there any orphan material left that I might want to (carefully of course, and backup) someday look for and delete?

    That's all.

      You did the right thing.

When upgrading, did you delete everything in the PGV install directory except the "config.php" file and the "index" and "media" directories?  If not, you'll have some orphan program files around, some of which MAY cause the program to act up.

If you have orphan program files, you should just do the delete-and-upload again.  You won't need to re-import your GEDCOM, since the previous re-import has already set up the new database structure.

Don't forget that the various modules are optional, and you can delete subdirectories for any you're not planning to use.  Likewise, all language files except the xxx.en.php ones are optional.  You can delete the ones corresponding to languages you don't plan to activate on your site.

Yep, did just as you stated; before upload took out punbb & gallery, + the language files I don't use.  To be honest I think it took longer to delete the old files/directories, upload the zip file and unpack it than it took to re-import my gedcom and get back on the air.  I almost hesitate to put that in writing considering the misery some people seem to be in the last few days over this.  I remember all too well forgetting to do something a few versions ago and being in the same boat so asked before doing it this time.  Anyway just curious about an upgrade vs fresh install of the database tables.

You would do an upgrade if you have a number of users or if you have media.

I have users & media, hence the upgrade path.  Didn't lose any media, the other two users are in and my test and guest accounts work.

Ian, to get back to your original question << the SQL has changed in 4.2 and all I did was upgrade >>

I assume you mean by SQL, the databse and tables? If so then the answer is Yes, sort of. The purpoe of the re-import of your GEDCOM file is to do just that. The code for 4.2 (or any upgrade that changes the DB structure, automatically creates any new fields, tables etc, and changes any other, providing you do leave "Replace existing date" ticked during the import process - which you clearly did.

Its good to hear of an upgrade that went well, when there seems to be so many problmes on these boards.

However, if you look at the problems raised, they are by fairly few people, generally with unusual circumstances. We forget the hundreds that have alrteady upgraded without the need to come here for help. There have actually been over 1000 downloads of either the ALL or Basic packages in a little over 1 week!

Overall, believe it or not, I think this upgrade has gone better than most. So congrats to Greg, Gerry and the other devs.

<<Assuming it did, is/are there any orphan material left>>

Any old tables will have been deleted.  i.e. pgv_names was deleted and pgv_name was added.
