I have just started using PhpGedView again after a gap of a few years. Now using 4.3.0. Tried WebTrees - don't like it.

Below the individual identity line (gender icon, {names and ID block}, gender, {birth & death block}, 'Options for Individual' block); but above the 'Personal Facts and Details', 'Notes', 'Sources', 'Media', ... buttons, I have a columns of Sources with [+] expansion buttons. Structurally (from web inspector) they are a part of the 'names and ID' block. The Sources listed are not only for the individual, but also for parents and children. The Source data is also shown in the relevant boxes where they should be. This Sources list is totally unstyled, which makes me wonder if it should be there at all. I can't see a way to turn it off or move it.

    Should it be there?
If it should, could it be moved to after the main data panes?
    ... or even turned off?

I am not averse to modifying PHP. I've done quite a bit in my time.

The GEDCOM file was exported from PhpGedView a few years ago. (The cheap server I was using went away). It was then imported into FindMyPast which not only made a mess of several things, but added a lot of Source records to do with Census data. When exported from there, partially repaired, and imported into a new PhpGedView on a home server the problem list of Sources can be more than a screen high for some individuals.

    Hi, David:

I wondered where you'd gotten to. It's nice to hear from you again.

Please e-mail me some screen shots, because I can't for the life of me figure out what you're talking about. gkroll (at) keldine (dot) ca

    David:
Thank you for the screen shot.

The display of all related Source records below the name is normal behaviour. On my site, I don't see that "+" to expand the Source item, but clicking on the name of the source produces details about that Source entry. There's no way to change this behaviour.

Your problem appears to be that you have an excessive number of Source entries for the name of each person. That behaviour on the part of FindMyPast is not at all useful or friendly.

You have two ways of fixing the excessive number of sources. Neither method is easy -- they're both VERY tedious.

The (not recommended) method is to export the database to a GEDCOM, feed that GEDCOM into a text editor, and then delete all of the 2 SOUR records that you don't want. When done, re-import that corrected GEDCOM. This method is useful if you have a lot of Source references to sources that you are not interested in preserving.

For the record, the Source references are all of the form 2 SOUR @Snnnn@ , and the corresponding Source definition begins with the line 0 @Snnnn@ SOUR and ends at the next "0" line (these are "zero", not "capital o") . When you're getting rid of all references to a Source, you should delete all of the lines that define this Source as well.

The second method, also very tedious, is to click on the Edit Name option under each name, and then clear out the Source number for each source reference you want to delete. Don't forget to click "Save" when done. To use this effectively, you should configure your account to automatically accept changes made by you. That way, you don't have to approve every one of your changes. Don't forget to make a backup of your database before you start.

As noted above, if you're deleting all references to a given Source, you should delete that Source definition too.

In retrospect, you probably should have exported the Webtrees database to a GEDCOM, and then imported that GEDCOM into PhpGedView. In other words, avoid FindMyPast.

    Also:
I have a set of files to update your version 4.3.0 installation to the current 4.3.1 (svn). I'm not ready to publish 4.3.1 as yet, since there are a lot of language changes and corrections that are in "pending" status. The code itself is stable.

If you're interested in this, I can post a ZIP file to my server. Please let me know if you want to do this.
